The Governance Studies program at Brookings is dedicated to analyzing policy issues, political institutions and processes, and contemporary governance challenges. Our scholarship identifies areas in need of reform and proposes specific solutions with the goals of: improving the performance of the national government; informing debate; and providing policymakers with expert analysis and ideas to ensure better institutional governance.

Position Location
: This position is hybrid. Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of at least two days of remote work each week.

The Media Relations and Outreach Manager partners with Governance Studies (GS) scholars and Communication staff in developing, executing, and monitoring communications strategies. Using subject matter knowledge and editorial expertise, the Media Relations and Outreach Manager develops frames and messages to promote GS research and events and maximize the impact of the program’s work. Responsibilities include writing press releases, building media lists, coordinating media requests for scholars, organizing press events, and tracking and reporting analytics for communications campaigns and development efforts. The Media Relations and Outreach manager may also draft and send email products, draft and promote social media content, and copyedit and publish reports and blog posts as needed.

Media Relations (40%)
  • In partnership with Director of Communications, develop strategies for increasing coverage of GS research, experts, and events in support of the program’s impact goals; document strategies and establish benchmark goals as part of the GS communication team’s strategic planning process
  • Serve as main media relations point of contact for Governance Studies, writing and disseminating press releases and working with the promotions team to share with appropriate digital audiences.
  • Manage scholars’ media bookings and interviews. Route incoming press calls and emails.
  • Brainstorm creative ways in which GS can raise its visibility with core audiences and foster relationships with key media outlets and journalists.
  • Work with GS research staff to develop strategies for elevating their media presence as desired.
  • Expand reach to targeted audiences through proactive media outreach and by establishing relationships with reporters from relevant publications.
  • Interact with members of the media at public and private GS events; respond to questions and concerns with poise and professionalism.
  • Identify opportunities to react to breaking news and offer our experts for interviews and comments
  • Monitor print, online and broadcast media for coverage that includes mention of GS projects and experts.
  • Produce monthly and annual reports on media coverage to share with GS scholars and staff.
Stakeholder Outreach (40%)
  • In partnership with the Communications Director, work with scholars on outreach to key stakeholders on the Hill, in state and local government, the executive branch, financial and regulatory agencies, the business community, and other academics.
  • Build targeted policymaker and other stakeholder lists for GS research priorities.
  • Work with the Events Manager to build stakeholder lists for GS events.
  • Coordinate with Brookings Central Communications as needed to align GS stakeholder outreach and strategies with Institution-wide goals.

Communications Strategy, Support & Impact (20%)
  • In partnership with the Communications Director, work with scholars to develop framing and key messages and communications strategies to aid the development and promotion of GS research and events, helping to maximize their impact.
  • Develop materials to educate staff on communication practices
  • In partnership with Communications Director, provide impact storytelling support for GS research, events, initiatives, and scholars.
  • Track and report analytics for communications campaigns and development efforts.
  • Serve as additional support for events, email marketing, social media, and web publishing as needed.
  • Supervise communication intern.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field required. Minimum four years of related experience, preferably in a media relations capacity. Proven interest in political science and/or public policy a must. Must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to innovatively, creatively and effectively promote Governance Studies research and events to the media and general public. Initiative, dependability, news and public policy savvy, and an ability to successfully juggle multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously. Familiarity with databases for conducting media outreach such as CISION or Meltwater. HTML and design skills and knowledge of web Content Management Systems such as Wordpress. Must be able to learn other new technology applications for communications, data visualization, and design. Knowledge of and interest in domestic policy and governance issues strongly preferred.
