SUMMARY

The Media Relations & PR Manager will play a critical role in driving brand awareness and positioning ZERO TO THREE as the leading voice for the health and well-being of infants and toddlers. The Media Relations & PR Manager will be responsible for building and implementing a proactive strategy for engaging key journalists and tier-one national, local and specialist publications, securing high-profile placements and continuing to grow ZERO TO THREE’s share of voice. This includes building productive relationships with key journalists/media outlets, messaging and campaign development, providing advance and follow-up support for senior executives’ speaking engagements and interviews, and supporting other communications-related projects and key organizational initiatives. This position will report to the Director, Communications & Marketing and work collaboratively across the organization.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proactively cultivate relationships with the media to share our story externally, generate ideas and identify key moments in time for creative storytelling opportunities to drive external brand awareness.
  • Provide wraparound support for speaking engagements and interviews, including identifying key event/media opportunities for senior leadership and subject matter experts, media training and messaging guidance, drafting and editing presentations and writing talking points and speeches.
  • Establish and lead ZTT’s speakers bureau, including the development of a thought leadership strategy, public relations strategies to proactively secure and optimize speaker engagements. a bank of talking points, presentations, photos, and b-roll on key topics, and an efficient process for review and approval of all external public speaking engagements (conferences, panel discussions, etc.)
  • Serve as a strategic partner with program-focused communications managers and program leads to execute earned media campaigns in support of key initiatives, including supporting the dissemination of new reports and resources, maximizing their reach with the media and the field.
  • Write copy for media and collateral materials for organizational communications activities, including press releases, media pitches, op-eds, press statements, blogs, social media posts, media kits, annual reports, etc.
  • Actively monitor media in the early childhood field to inform ZTT’s communications strategy, develop story pitches, and proactively seize media opportunities.
  • Collaborate with social/web content leads to amplify media coverage across ZTT’s social media channels and websites in timely and creative ways. Serve as editorial lead for executive social media accounts to amplify organization’s initiatives and impact.
  • Manage agency of record, media/pr consultants
  • Produce monthly and annual reports on media coverage

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 6-8 years of related experience in nonprofit communications
  • Exceptional writer. Able to quickly develop op-eds, press releases, media advisories, Q&A, talking points, statements and other communication documents
  • Strong track record of achievement in pitching stories and placing principals in high-profile media outlets.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective national and local media strategies for complex issues areas, including but not limited to early childhood development, education, health and policy
  • Experience with social media influencer engagement, content campaigns, and media coverage amplification and measuring the ROI of media coverage
  • Advanced project management skills
  • Vendor management experience
  • Crisis communications experience
  • Strong attention to detail, with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Fluent in speaking and writing Spanish a plus
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to travel, including occasional overnight stays.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is frequently required to use finger dexterity as well as sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen. The employee may also need to remain seated for long periods of time, have the ability to perform repetitive motions, communicate verbally and hear well enough to detect nuances and receive detailed information. The employee may be required to walk, grasp objects, push or pull objects, lift objects up to 30 pounds, bend, squat, reach, stand, and/or kneel. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision for expansive reading.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing this job. Depending on work location, the incumbent will typically work indoors in a heated and air-conditioned office, with a mixture of natural, incandescent and fluorescent light with low to moderate noise levels or be subject to working conditions conducive to a home office. When travel is expected, the incumbent will be exposed to outside environmental conditions during those times.
