JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant

REPORTS TO: Practice Manager, Practice Owner

JOB OVERVIEW: Responsible for patient care under the direction of a physician or other licensed health care provider. The current position is 40 hours every other week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

1. Scheduling patient appointments

2. Answering telephone calls

3. Obtaining medical records, including pertinent office notes, laboratory, and radiological test results prior to office visits

4. Ordering pertinent laboratory and radiological test results prior to office visits

5. Rooming patients, obtaining, and documenting vital signs, reason for seeking care, medical history, surgical history, family history, social history, allergies, and medications

6. Reconciliation of patient medication list

7. Downloading, printing, and documenting glucose meter, continuous glucose monitor, and insulin pump data

8. Processing of voicemail, patient portal, or in-person messages

9. Following prescription refill procedures

10. Processing prior authorizations

11. Recording patient charges for nurse visits and procedures

12. Assisting clinician with patient education pertaining to their ongoing health care

13. Placement and removal of continuous glucose monitors

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Must be able to recognize and respond appropriately to urgent/emergent situations per protocols.

2. Maintenance of work area, examination rooms, office / medical supplies, and medication samples

3. Perform basic triage per specific office protocol procedures.

4. Maintain professional appearance and personal conduct at all times.

5. Adhere to employer work practices

6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, staff, and management.

7. Effectively cope with typical job stress.

8. Document work processes as required.

9. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education/ Certification/Licensure:

1. Certified Medical Assistant through the Minnesota State Department of Health or possess an Interim Certification and pass the National Medical Assistant Certification exam (i.e. AAMA or NCCT) within one year of issuance.

2. CPR certification for Health Care Providers.

Experience:

A minimum of 3 months experience in a medical office environment preferred. Recent graduates will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

All Skills:

1. General knowledge of medical terminology

2. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

3. Working knowledge of CPT & ICD-10 coding procedures

4. General knowledge of medications and injection procedures, especially as they pertain to endocrinology and diabetes

5. Experience in drawing lab specimens

Other Requirements:

1. Maintenance of Minnesota State DOH Medical Assistant-certified certification.

2. Ability to multi-task efficiently and effectively

3. Must be able to act calmly and effectively in busy or stressful situations

4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

5. Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing

6. Adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality, and personal appearance

Physical Requirements:

1. Hearing: Ability to perform job duties in person and over the telephone. Able to use stethoscope and respond to verbal questions

2. Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly with patients both in person and over the telephone.

3. Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including visual examination of patient and reading information from printed sources and computer screens.

4. Other: Requires frequent lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds, unassisted. This includes assisting patients when required. Adequate physical ability including sufficient manual dexterity to perform the requisite health care service, including injections. Requires frequent bending, reaching, repetitive hand movements, standing, walking, squatting, and sitting, with some heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling exerted regularly throughout a regular work shift. Potential exposure to communicable diseases, bodily fluids, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
