Harborview Medical Center's International Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary/Part-Time (20% FTE) MEDICAL ASSISTANT to assist the medical and nursing staff with care testing, injections, vital signs, procedure setup and support.

SCHEDULE:
Thursdays; 8:00am - 4:30pm

Harborview's International Medicine Clinic specializes in acutely medically and socially complex non-English speaking refugee and immigrant populations. Additionally, it hosts two special clinics with one treating torture survivors (Northwest Health and Human Rights Clinic) and one providing critical health screening for recently arrived refugees (Refugee Health Promotion Clinic).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean and ready for patients
  • Greet patients and families and review patient needs with providers daily
  • Advocate for the patient/family by locating appropriate staff to address concerns
  • Prepare medical record for clinic visit. Verify presence of medical records and existing records and x-rays as necessary
  • Assist provider by facilitating use of technology including EMR (electronic medical records) and PACS (electronic imaging)
  • Coordinate communication flow in the clinics including answering and directing telephone inquiries to the appropriate individual
  • Coordinate clerical patient care activities and/or specialized technical duties unique to the assigned clinic to ensure accurate and expedited patient check-in and discharge, including obtaining consents for care and referral information
  • Take initiative to maintain patient flow for assigned providers/team
  • Transport patients and lab specimens
  • Complete billing documents as appropriate
  • Schedule appointments for patients
  • Assist in closing procedures of clinics and preparation for next day
  • Prepare patient for examination by the provider. Observe and document the patient’s physical and emotional condition and vital signs in the medical record, recognize and report symptoms of common medical illnesses to physician or nurse
  • Assist with technical procedures such as EKG, retinal eye exams, O2 sats, wound care, and nebulizers
  • Order and maintain supplies and specimens
  • Maintenance special equipment, including sterile equipment and set-ups for small clinical procedures such as biopsies and sutures
  • May include coordinating the clerical activities and supporting the front desk activities for patient care in the clinics and between clinic visits
  • Work includes occasional assistance with patient recall and/or QI/QA efforts in Pediatric Clinics
  • May withdraw venous blood and capillary blood or give injectable medications

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant course accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or other recognized regional or national accreditation board
  • Must be Washington State Medical Assistant-Certified or achieve this designation within 6-months of hire. Failure to achieve and/or maintain this designation will result in termination of employment
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider CPR card
