Mental Health Therapist Job at Freeborn County
The Mental Health Therapist is professionally licensed to perform mental health outpatient treatment in a
team setting, requiring close collaboration with other mental health and social service professionals. Provides
crisis intervention, diagnostic assessments, community education, and treatment planning and counseling
services to individuals, couples, families and groups.
- Conducts mental health intake and diagnostic assessments including: determining problems
self or others; prepares treatment plans and makes appropriate referrals to other resources.
- Responds to crisis or potential crisis situations including: providing triage; assessing danger
enforcement, psychiatric referral, or hospitalization. Responsible for on-call rotation for crisis
situations.
- Provides on-going clinical mental health therapy and diagnostic evaluation including
treatment plans; monitoring client compliance and involvement in treatment process; and
making determinations for hospitalization or more intense services.
- Collaborates and consults with a wide range of agencies and resources, both within and
outcomes by coordinating information and efforts with schools, doctors, and psychiatrists;
obtaining referrals from probation and parole; and providing follow-up and aftercare work with
various resources.
- Maintains accurate records to meet licensing standards, satisfy insurers, defend practices
documentation; exercising professional judgment for content; organizing and preparing
reports; and determining if release of information form is necessary.
- Prepares and provides comprehensive diagnostic reports to appropriate service providers.
- Provides education and public relations to the community and other professionals. Provides
- Participates in assigned committee work such as advisory boards, multi-County efforts for
care; determining the role of mental health therapists and services to meet community needs;
and performing creative problem solving to meet needs within available resources.
- Maintain training/educational competencies and own clinical professional development.

called upon to perform a variety of duties as part of their role with the County.
Position Requirements
- Considerable knowledge of mental illness, psychological assessments, and best practices in

- Knowledge of relevant laws and local and state rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of social services programs within Freeborn County and the state.
- Ability to assess and diagnose symptoms, problems, and mental illness.
- Ability to plan treatments and implement therapeutic interventions.
- Ability to write reports and maintain records.
- Ability to deal with aggressive, irrational or out-of-control behaviors and to de-escalate crisis.
- Ability to motivate behavior and gain trust of clients.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to prepare and make presentations to groups of people.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and data privacy.
- Ability to use various computer and software programs.
- Ability to apply professional principles and judgement within overall goals established by
- Ability to manage work involving complex and significant variables, requiring analytical ability
- Ability to communicate and maintain relationships to motivate behavior requiring a well-developed sense of strategy and timing to engender trust of diverse audiences.
- Master’s Degree in social work, sociology, psychology, counseling or a related field
- Completion of an internship in a clinical setting
- Two years of work experience.
- Or a combination of education and experience to successfully perform job duties.
This position will require the acquisition and maintenance of the following additional certificates/licenses:
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker or Licensed Psychologist
- MN Merit Eligibility
- Driver’s License
- Office equipment and technology
Physical and Mental Requirements
This job typically requires: sitting, standing, walking, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing,
typing, and seeing. There is exposure to computer keyboards and video screens. This position is
generally light-duty and may require the exertion up to 10 pounds of force.

Working Conditions
Work is primarily located in the home but may include in office and other locations in the community.
There is travel required to other facilities, clients’ homes, meetings, training, etc. There is exposure to
hostile, aggressive or irrational persons. Worker may be subject to odors, wetness, poor illumination, and
sudden temperature change. Worker may be exposed to dangerous physical and/or environmental
conditions (animals, insects, rodents, house in need of repair, drugs, weapons, etc.) Worker is exposed to
noise, distractions, and interruptions. Worker may be exposed to hostile, verbally abusive, and emotional
clients.
