Classification Summary

Freeborn County Department of Human Services has an opening for a full-time (40 hours a week) Mental Health Worker - Family Therapist. The Family Therapist is professionally licensed to perform mental health outpatient treatment in-office and in client homes, requires close collaboration with other mental health and social service professionals. This position may provide diagnostic assessments, treatment planning and counseling services to individuals, couples, families and groups.

Examples of Duties
  • Conducts individual, family and group counseling.
  • Assists in administering and interpreting psychological tests.
  • Conducts marriage counseling to modify the interaction of couples.
  • Consults with human service professionals to determine the need or obtain guidance in the mental health assessment/study of clients.
  • Intervenes in client crisis situations.
  • Coordinates activities with social service agencies and other organizations and makes necessary arrangements for the utilization of these resources by clients.
  • Consults with social service workers, physicians, teachers, ministers, and other concerned professionals, lay persons and students to explain and promote health services and to obtain individual and public cooperation.
  • May give testimony in connection with court cases.
  • Maintains log of therapy sessions and client's progress and records essential information to client's record.
Minimum Qualifications

MN Merit System Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited college in social work, clinical psychiatric nursing, counseling/clinical psychology, or a related field.

NOTE: Certain positions may require licensure as a mental health professional, or
ability to be licensed within two years of hire. Acceptable licensure may include: LP, LMFT, LICSW, and LPCC, or APRN

Freeborn County Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience


  • Master’s Degree in social work, sociology, psychology, counseling or a related field
  • Completion of an internship in a clinical setting
  • Two years of work experience.
  • Or a combination of education and experience to successfully perform job duties.
Licenses/Certifications
This position will require the acquisition and maintenance of the following additional certificates/licenses:
  • Licensed Graduate Social Worker, Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker or Licensed
Psychologist
  • Driver’s License
  • Certified in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy or working towards eligibility for certification

Examination Process

The examination procedure will consist entirely of a rating of education and experience.
