Job Summary: Mentors will be the direct connection for the participants in the Arches program. Five mentors will jointly facilitate two group meetings a week with 20 young adults on probation, and meet individually with four participants weekly, implementing an Interactive Journaling curriculum on which they will be trained. Mentors all provide support to participants in groups, individually, and on the phone, addressing areas such as goal setting, life skills, social and emotional development, personal and family relationships, and other aspects of participants' lives, helping participants break negative feeling-thought-behavior patterns and adopt improved attitudes and behaviors. Mentors will discuss journaling assignments with participants and track their progress towards identified program goals. Mentors will report to the Project Coordinator, complete weekly progress notes, and receive biweekly coaching to discuss client issues and progress.

Essential Functions

  • Facilitating bi-weekly groups as part of team of 5 program mentors and 20 participants, building positive peer relationships and implementing an Interactive Journaling curriculum
  • Meeting individually with 4 designated mentees at least once a week
  • Being available to provide emotional support, guidance, and advice to mentees at all times via phone
  • Assisting mentees in personal development and growth
  • Timely completion of client progress notes and other assessments of client progress and communicating client needs to program coordinator
  • Administering data collection instruments (such as skills tests or self-assessments) to participants and providing Project Coordinator with results
  • Taking attendance and distributing metro cards at group meetings
  • Identifying and assisting with referrals to other services that would be beneficial to clients
  • Attending initial and ongoing training and other technical assistance or professional development activities identified by the Department of Probation or Safe Space

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Experience working with local youth or court-involved youth
  • Firsthand knowledge of the justice system
  • Knowledge and understanding of positive youth development, cognitive behavioral therapies and motivational interviewing
  • All mentors should be familiar with the Jamaica community and its resources

Pay Rate: $20/hr
