Located approximately 26 miles from the City of Fairbanks, Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. Fort Knox celebrated its 25-year anniversary in 2021, and has produced over 8.5 million ounces since it began operation. In 2020, Kinross acquired Manh Choh – a project expected to commence production in 2024 and process ore at Fort Knox.

Job Description

Meet production goals by coordinating the activities of the mill, heap leach, and pond operations to maximize process efficiencies and gold recovery in a safety-oriented workplace.

Job Responsibilities

  • Depending on the organizational structure on site, areas of responsibility may include, but not be limited to Mine, Mill, Maintenance, Environment, Supply Chain, Health and Safety and / or typically will lead more than one function
  • Responsible for medium to large production crews and / or teams required to meet the commitments for key initiatives and prioritizes organizational goals
  • Plans and executes medium to long-term strategies that have a time horizon of up to 1 year to support the growth of operations / the function
  • Develops systems and measures that appropriately assesses performance of operations / function(s) and monitors and manages overall performance of the function(s) and direct reports
  • Assesses the human, financial, and operational resources of operations / function to strategically maximize efficiencies
  • Influences the outcomes of Superintendents/ Supervisors / General Foremen / team to maintain and improve health, safety and environmental standards established by the company
  • Implements and evaluates processes, policies, systems, and practices related to equipment and tools, and / or process controls, aiming to ensure better quality and higher productivity
  • Leads the execution of scheduled work and operational and/or maintenance activities to meet or exceed production and project targets, utilizing effective asset management principles
  • Leads by example, coaching/mentoring and to continually improve health and safety behaviours by visibly putting health and safety first

Education and Experience

1. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
2. Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering required or equivalent work experience.
3. Ten years previous experience in process plant operations, including five years in precious metals, maintenance planning, and front line supervision is required.
4. Good understanding of gold metallurgy.
5. General knowledge of mining and the integration of the mining, milling, and maintenance functions.
6. Good working knowledge and skills with a P.C. utilizing word processing and spreadsheet programs.
7. Strong verbal, written, analytical, problem solving, and persuasive skills, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
8. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, with others in a team environment, and as part of the management team.
9. Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
10. Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends.

Skills

1. Establish operating and maintenance priorities by working with the Mill General Foreman to meet production goals.
2. Establish operating priorities and work with Maintenance and Operations supervisors to coordinate activities in completing work orders.
3. Supervise multi-craft General Foreman and maintain acceptable equipment availabilities in a safe manner to meet the company's production goals.
4. Manage and evaluate the job performance of the Mill Operations General Foreman concerning safety, production, operator training and development, and supervisory skills.
5. Recommend and coordinate process modifications to increase gold recovery and plant availability, decrease costs, and improve safety and health aspects of the mill.
6. Maintain a close and cooperative working relationship with Mine Operations Superintendent and Technical Service Department managers. Must promote this throughout mill department supervision.
7. Review performance evaluations, recommend promotions, and carry out disciplinary actions as needed.
8. Review documentation of accidents, injuries, and equipment damage and recommend prevention strategies as necessary.
9. Work with purchasing and warehouse to ensure constant availability of mill consumables.
10. Monitor records concerning all facets of maintenance and operations in the mill including safety meetings, attendance, vacations, scheduling, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, and accidents.
11. Possess knowledge of all phases of mill equipment including critical components and change-out hours.
12. Work with safety and environmental personnel to monitor work areas and maintain and improve the health and safety of the mill work environment.
13. Work with the Ore Processing Manager to compile annual operating budgets.
14. Prepare monthly summaries and individual reports as required.
15. Participate in the design and construction of plant expansions or modifications.
16. Maintain accurate records and files.
17. Must be production oriented.
18. Punctuality and regular attendance is required.
19. Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.
20. Compliance with all company policies and procedures, including, but not limited to safety, confidentiality, and environmental policies.
21. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state.
22. Work safely in all areas and identify potential safety hazards and work with management to correct them.
23. Work without significant risk of harm to self and others.
24. Perform other duties as required.
