Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm with flexibility. May require some weekends and evenings.

Compensation: Grade 8: Salary Range Starting at $22.61/hour

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Arts & Cultural Development Director, the Museum Manager is responsible for the general management of the Morgantown History Museum (MHM), including programs, partnerships, fundraising, budgets, and external relations. The Manager works closely with the Director of Arts and Cultural Development in developing and articulating the strategic direction of the Museum and implements a progressive program for the Museum’s revenue generation, fundraising, exhibitions, tours, research projects, collections management, educational activities, volunteer coordination and community outreach.

Primary responsibilities include the day-to-day direction and operation of the museum. The Manager leads marketing efforts and represents MHM in fundraising, recruiting, and other public efforts.

The Manager is responsible for managing the maintenance of the facility and to develop strategies to optimize the building’s care and use. The Manager develops appropriate administrative processes and procedures to enhance and develop the museum into the future.

The Manager must interact effectively with many constituencies: staff, students, participants, funders, school and civic organizations, and local and state units of government. He or she is expected to take a leadership role in monitoring public history trends and recommending appropriate programming to keep pace with a changing environment. This individual must be a pro-active, visible symbol of MHM. The Manager must have a deep passion for preserving history and an enthusiasm for passing that ethic on to others.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Completion of 4-year college degree in Museum Studies, History, Business Administration, Arts & Culture, or a closely related field.
  • Combination of experience & education may be considered but only after minimum experience has been met.

Certification/License:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in museum or arts management, community activities, or program administration and operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - KNOWLEDGE – SKILLS - ABILITIES

  • Develops sustainable strategic direction and establishes initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local and statewide awareness and usage of MHM.
  • Under the direction of the Director of Arts and Cultural Development, oversee the day to day operations of the museum and implement a progressive program for the Museum’s exhibitions, tours, research projects, collections management, educational activities, volunteer coordination and community outreach, and fundraising.
  • Review and make recommendations on the operations, programs, communications, and community services to enhance the efficiency and community impact of the museum.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of communications, marketing, and graphic design work related to Museum programs, services, in coordination DACD staff with City communications office.
  • Develops and makes recommendations on programming, events, partnerships, and other opportunities for the Morgantown History Museum.
  • Serves as a primary liaison to guest services staff and volunteers and Friends of Morgantown History Museum.
  • Recruits and oversees performance of guest services staff and volunteers.
  • Works closely with the Director of Arts and Cultural Development and the Friends of Morgantown History Museum to plan and implement fundraising activities and assists in grant writing and developing relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
  • Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support.
  • Works closely with the Sales and Marketing Manager and City Communications office to create an effective communications plan to raise the profile of the Museum.
  • Manages, secures and maintains the property and facilities of the Museum, as well as the collections held in public trust.
  • Advocates on important issues in historic preservation and underwater cultural resources on the local, regional, national, and international level.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must have experience and skills in marketing, communication, and social media, for the promotion and publicity of museums activities and arts and cultural programs, events, and services.
  • Must be capable of planning, developing, promoting, and operating comprehensive year-round operations of a museum and programs and services related to the history of Morgantown.
  • Must have the ability to work harmoniously and cooperatively with fellow employees and the public.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Office work only.
  • Good working conditions with limited exposure to physically demanding, unpleasant, strenuous, and/or hazardous elements.
  • Position requires the ability to lift 20 lbs.

USE OF TECHNOLOGY & EQUIPMENT

  • Equipment used on a regular basis includes personal computer, black/white and color photo copiers, calculator, digital camera, multi-line phone system, stage and lighting systems and sound systems.

CONTACT & SUPERVISION

  • Employee encounters extensive contact with various community groups, city departments, elected officials, artists, board members, stakeholders, volunteers etc., and the public on a daily basis.
  • Responsible for the supervision of 1 full time and/or several part time employees.
  • Reports to the Arts & Cultural Development Supervisor.
