Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR)
provides a broad range of programs, services, facilities and park amenities in the City and County of Denver
. Outdoor Recreation (ODR)
offers a variety of outdoor activities for all ages. Outdoor Recreation is responsible for group programs within Denver parks that activate snow, water, and land. Large initiatives include, but are not limited to, high and low challenge course elements at Genesee Mountain Park, ski and snowboard partnerships, paddle sports, and backcountry experiences including camping, hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing.
DPR’s Outdoor Recreation team is seeking to hire a Program Administrator to help implement, administer, and develop safe, high-quality, and inclusive Outdoor Recreation program experiences. This position provides technical expertise in various programs, community engagement, staff training, and operational leadership.
Job responsibilities of the Outdoor Recreation Program Administrator will include:
  • Working with Recreation Center Coordinators, partnering organizations, or city representatives to coordinate the use of facilities and implementation of programs that have been identified through collaborative efforts to meet the needs of the community and customers
  • Performing community outreach and engagement to solicit input regarding the program’s direction and effectiveness, and to develop and administer new programs based on community needs
  • Leading and overseeing the work of the Outdoor Recreation program coordinators, administrative assistants, and on-call staff
  • Developing program calendars and schedules to maximize programming opportunities
  • Managing recreational permitting through land agencies such as the Forest Service, National Park Service, and county open spaces
  • Assisting with hiring, staff recruitment, and implementation of staff training and development
  • ODR program oversite, implementation, and development of the following: (I.) facilities, gear, and equipment inspections, (II.) program quality observation, (III.) risk management, safety, employee handbook, policies, and protocols (IV.) direct program facilitation, including management of Genesee Challenge Course and Base Camp
  • Conducting monthly reporting and assessments of program metrics
  • Working in partnership with the DPR Marketing Team to advertise and promote programs
  • Supporting management of Outdoor Recreation budgets
  • Performing other duties as assigned
About You
We are looking for a passionate and organized recreation professional with extensive experience in implementing and coordinating outdoor recreation programs. Candidates must enjoy working in a fast-paced setting and should excel while working under pressure. This position requires strong skills in both working collaboratively and independently.
Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Recreation Management, Education, Program Administration or other directly related field
  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder Certification and/or instructor of WFAI or WFRI
  • Level 1, 2, or 3 Challenge Course certification
  • Experience in managing a challenge course facility
  • Valid driver’s license and comfort driving a 14-passenger minibus and ability to drive a truck with a trailer
  • Current certification(s) in a variety of outdoor recreation disciplines preferred
  • Three (3) years’ experience planning, coordinating, and implementing outdoor recreation programs
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to be flexible amidst changing priorities, and able to work a variety of shifts including evenings and weekends

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Management, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, or a related field
  • Experience: Three (3) years of professional or technical level experience planning the administrative aspects of a program(s) or training program participants and/or volunteers.
  • Licensures/Certification(s): Requires certification in CPR/First Aid/AED at the time of application or by the completion of probation. Certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
  • Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.
