Under direct supervision the Parole and Probation Officer is responsible for performing specific supervision, court services, and law enforcement functions with the Parole and probation section. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, Social work, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be 21 years of age.

  • Must be eligible to participate in and become P.O.S.T. certified.

  • No felony convictions, and no misdemeanor convictions within one (1) year prior to application for this position.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs casework services, investigations, pre-sentencing recommendations, supervision of Parolees and Probationers for adult and juvenile offenders, drug testing, referral services, and school system monitoring of juveniles, fieldwork and enforcement activities under the direction of the Tribal Judge.

  • Conducts investigations regarding pre-sentencing, parole and probation violations and any special conditions surrounding drug and alcohol treatment and testing adults and juveniles received from the Washoe Tribal Court and/or other judicial authority.

  • Conducts inspections of place of employment and residence with personal interviews with offender.

  • Determines offender’s classification/supervision level based on severity of prior and current offenses, incarceration periods, criminal and personal history, and violations while under supervision.

  • Develops case files on each offender containing legal documents regarding criminal history, parole and probation agreements, monthly reports, correspondence, and treatment evaluations.

  • Ensures compliance with all conditions of parole and probation, progress or discharge, and monthly caseload and statistical reports.

  • Performs, as required, Peace Officer duties by conducting arrests, booking violations, conducting searches and seizures, conducting surveillance where probable cause exists, and transporting prisoners to court or detention facilities.

  • Ensures that proper due process rights are afforded each arrestee following arrests, and provides proper documentation of charges.

  • Supervises and counsels offender regarding parole and probation rules, stipulations and agreements as well as guidance regarding appropriate behavior, program opportunities, personal or family problems, emergency situations, medical and psychological needs and makes appropriate referrals.

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.

  • Knowledge of the Tribal judicial system.

  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).

  • Skill in making effective decisions in emergency situations.

  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment
  • Work is performed in an office or courtroom setting with a moderate noise level and outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur. Situations may occur where prolonged sitting, driving, walking, or waiting is required.

Must pass and comply with the PL101.630-Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act.
