The City of North Las Vegas is excited to announce a continuous (ongoing) recruitment for the position of Part-Time Police Communications Dispatcher!   • Shift work required - This position supports an operation that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You must be able to work any shift (days, swings, or graveyard), any day, weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts. Currently, the schedule consists of 10-hour shifts and are divided into two squads with days off being Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, or Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
  • If applicable, must successfully complete refresher training program - The training program lasts approximately 7 months and assigned shifts will rotate throughout the training program. Employees will be required to learn, memorize, and apply material, including self-study of material. Employees will be evaluated on a regular basis.
  • Pay considerations - The starting hourly pay for this position is $28.11 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range, no exceptions.
  • Background and Disqualifiers – Applicants who proceed in the selection process will be required to complete an extensive police background. Among other items, the following are disqualifying behaviors –
    • Any felony conviction.
    • Any domestic violence conviction.
    • Gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
    • Although there have been recent changes to laws regarding the legal possession and consumption of marijuana, the City of North Las Vegas will continue to adhere to its professional standards and guidelines as it relates to recent and continuous use of the drug.
  • Experienced position - This position is not an entry level dispatcher position and requires having a successful completion of a probationary period and previous police dispatcher experience.
  • Part-Time position - This position is a part time/temporary position that DOES NOT include health or medical benefits. Hours for this position will not exceed 938 per calendar year.

THE ROLE

Police Communications Dispatchers are an integral part of the North Las Vegas Police Department. When someone calls for help, the dispatcher’s voice is the first one they hear. Police Communications Dispatchers perform a variety of complex police dispatching duties that includes the following: receives, screens, prioritizes emergency 9-1-1 and non-emergency calls; dispatches Police Patrol Units, Detectives, SWAT, K9, CSI, Animal Protection Services, Parking Enforcement, etc.; documents calls for service and officer activity into a computer-aided dispatch system; queries and enters into criminal history data bases; maintains confidentiality; demonstrates professionalism, compassion, and empathy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED at the time of hire into the position.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Police Communications Dispatcher with the North Las Vegas Police Department.
  • Must have successfully completed probationary period.
  • Must have left the North Las Vegas Police Department in good standing.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • NCIC Certification within six months of hire/reclassification and be recertified as required.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record, and the ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license within required time frame.

ASSESSMENT/SELECTION PROCESS

  • Complete online application - Interested candidates MUST submit an application through the City’s application system. Evaluation of meeting requirements will be made solely on information provided.

**The selection process may consist of the following if the applicant has been gone more than 2 years.

  • CritiCall Test (Weighted 25%) - Once the application and other supporting documentation have been reviewed and it has been determined that the minimum qualifications have been met, an invitation to take the CritiCall Test may be sent. The invitation and testing instructions will be sent to the email provided on the application. The CritiCall Test is a computer-based test that is used for the Police Communications Dispatcher position. The test measures job-related skills that are necessary for this position. The CritiCall Test modules include:
    • Decision Making
    • Data Entry
    • Call Summarization
    • Cross Referencing
    • Memory Recall
    • Prioritization
    • Map Reading
    • Spelling
    • Sentence Clarity
    • Candidates much achieve the required minimum score determined by the Department using a validation process.
    • Allow 2-3 hours to complete the test.
    • Those successfully passing the CritiCall Test, may be called for an interview.
  • Oral board interview with performance exercise (Interview weighted 50%, performance exercise weighted 25%) – Top qualifying candidates will then be invited to an oral interview, by appointment only. During the interview process, a performance exam will be administered.
  • Background Investigation - Includes an extensive background check, polygraph/CVSA examination, medical/drug screen exam, and a psychological evaluation. All top scoring candidates must pass the Background Investigation in order to move forward in the process.

BACKGROUND PROCESS & PRE EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for this position are subject to pre-employment screenings and employment is contingent upon these results. Pre-employment screenings may include but are not limited to: local, state, and federal criminal history checks, and may require submission of fingerprints; drug screen; and physical examinations to include a psychological evaluation.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to work different shifts and is exposed to stress and emergency situations.
  • Working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but can be loud during periods of peak activity; work with computers in varying light and noise conditions.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.

SALARY

  • All selected candidates will start at Step 1 with an hourly rate of $28.11.
