Summary:
The primary purpose of the Patient Care Coordinator position is to serve as a core member of the Department of Neurosurgery team, utilizing specialized knowledge, skills and competencies in patient management and care coordination. He/she is an asset to the patient and Faculty/ Department, guiding the many different steps in surgical patient care.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Must possess exceptional customer service and patient centered care.
3. Answers the telephone with a pleasant demeanor, always identifying self, and location.
4. Schedules patients for initial, follow-up and post-operative office visits. Regularly communicates with clinical staff regarding patient health issues and complications.
5. Coordinates patients' surgeries and associated testing (diagnostic and follow-up imaging, PA Ts, etc)
6. Work in coordination with Department Administration and financial team to maximize reimbursement.
7. Mailing referral letters and following up with referring physicians; aids in Department marketing as required.
8. Liaison between patients, physicians and mid-level providers.
9. Functions as team member handling both routine and complex, issues and problems. Counsels patients with regards to more complex inquires, payment arrangements, third party practices, etc. Refer patients to financial counseling department and back end resources as appropriate.
l l. Provides administrative support to physicians and mid-level practitioners as required.
12. Aids in departmental promotion and growth.
13. Prepares and maintains patient charts, complying in all Depa1tment, University, State and Federal policies.
14. Monitors accuracy of records and assists in auditing of it, as required. Assures that information provided by patients and coworkers are as accurate and current as possible. Especially cognizant of medical compliance of patients and appropriately documents post-operative non-compliance.
15. Opens and closes physician schedules and reviews bump reports.
16. Clearly communicates work related problems and issues to team leaders/Department Administrator.
17. Treats patients in a ca1ing and professional manner that fosters a positive image and instills confidence in the cate received.
18. Uses professional communication skills effectively with all members of the clinical staff and external customers.
19. Maintains effective working relationship with co-workers, demonstrating teamwork.
20. Communicates a professional image and attitude through appropriate non-verbal behavior and proper attire (professional dress)
21. Cooperates with supervisors and leadership in working toward specific goals and meeting workload requirements.

22. Understands and adheres to Rutgers compliance standards as they appear in Rutgers Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
23. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

Bachelor's degree with medical terminology and experience working in a healthcare environment.

Two (2) years related experience including surgical scheduling and scheduling in associated testing.

Must have exceptional medical and insurance knowledge (referrals, pre-certification, authorization, individual physician insurance participation levels, global periods etc.)

Must be proficient in computer applications and web based programs, such as MS Office products and MS Outlook.

Must be detailed oriented, have excellent organization skills and hold self accountable to high standards of professional excellence.

Must have excellent interpersonal/human relations skills, time management skills, prioritizing, and excel lent verbal and written communication skills.

Equivalent education, experience, and/or training may be substitute for the degree requirements.

Typical Working Conditions:

Busy, fast-paced office environment.

The office can be loud and with lots of activity. The role is based in Newark, NJ. It may require some travel to Livingston, NJ location as needed.

Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
