Summary


Champion Petfoods has an outstanding opportunity for a Plant Director to contribute to the success of our rapidly growing, well-respected international brands. Through our award-winning manufacturing facilities - we call them our kitchens - we continue to advance our mission of making Biologically Appropriate™ dog and cat foods from fresh regional ingredients.


Reporting to the North American Director of Operations, the Plant Director has overall accountability for our state of the art, purpose-built manufacturing facility in Auburn, Kentucky, USA. The position delivers on the annual operating plan, including safety, operating costs, quality, environmental requirements, capital projects and organizational development to help ensure the facility business objectives are met.


Responsibilities


  • Oversee manufacturing and shipping operations across 3 shifts with a team of 5 direct reports – Health & Safety Manager, Operations Manager, Warehouse Manager, Maintenance & Facilities Manager and QA Manager, their supervisory teams and approximately 200 non-union hourly staff.
  • Responsible for all aspects of operations and achieving key performance measurements related to safety, quality and food safety and cost, while continually improving process reliability and performance.
  • Leads through influence in a matrix organization in relation to additional functions that occur at the facility, such as Supply Chain, Finance.
  • Continue to build a culture of mutual respect, teamwork, and professionalism, demonstrating active support in the Company’s values and policies.
  • Empower and develop teams by applying situational leadership, coaching, facilitation, presentation, role playing (feedback & conflict management) skills.
  • Removes barriers and obstacles to team performance. Demonstrates a sense of urgency and tenacity to resolve problems and implement process improvements. Leads failure analysis when required.
  • Deliver perform evaluations and creates development/training plans for individuals within the team and manages employee engagement.
  • Develops and ensures all procedures and best practices are documented.
  • Creates an atmosphere of 100% compliance to operational processes, procedures and continuous improvement using problem solving methodologies and established principals, including GMPs and other guidelines to ensure safety and sanitation.
  • Lead the achievement of a zero-injury workplace by ensuring safe work conditions for employees and compliance with all local and federal regulations on environmental, health and safety issues.
  • Support managers and teams in attainment of objectives contained in the operating plan.
  • Promote and enhance a positive team environment, including efforts to establish and maintain high levels of employee involvement and communication.
  • Develop, implement, and measure innovative programs for cost and quality improvement.
  • Provides input in the development of production plans and schedules required to meet agreed-to production targets.
  • Develop and assist in the implementation of capital projects to ensure success in delivering expectations within budget and timelines.
  • Lead the execution of selected operational strategic projects/opportunities.
  • Promote excellence in all manufacturing practices, including those required to support optimal quality, yield and cost containment, with minimal rework or downgrades.
  • Support the development, implementation and continuation of all product development initiatives and quality assurance programs, including SQF, HACCP and associated GMP’s Review monthly reports and ensure effective remedial plans are implemented to address issues.
  • Coordinate with other functions (e.g. Supply Chain, Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, Finance) to maximize overall effectiveness and efficiency on multifunctional initiatives.
  • Provide detailed review of monthly performance reports and variance explanations.
  • Manage the facilities operating budget by determining and assisting in the preparation of the annual budget, obtaining approval, reviewing monthly spending variances, and taking appropriate action when necessary.
  • Maintain a constant awareness of company profitability, including budgetary control constraints.

Requirements


  • 10+ years’ experience in a food processing or manufacturing environment including cost management, production planning, inventory control, quality; and continuous improvement at site leader level.
  • 5+ years leading a high-performance management team and developing staff.
  • Encourages employees to identify improvement opportunities; sets realistic challenges for the team; influences others, internally and externally, to drive change efforts; encourages collaboration and innovation.
  • Ability to understand the company’s competitive context; strong analytical and conceptual abilities to develop his/her own plan within the general company strategy and communicate clearly to the team.
  • Demonstrated track record leading the improvement of operations while delivering day to day performance.
  • Highly professional demeanor and diplomatic skills. Ability to create effective partnerships at all levels of the organization as a collaborative team player.
  • Experience in developing, reporting and analyzing financial measurement of plant performance
  • Experience in food processing technologies.
  • Knowledge of regulatory codes and regulations (HACCP, Health and Safety, etc.), food industry and food science
  • Strong organizational, analytical, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, self-initiating, organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and independently.
  • Results-orientation in setting and pursuing aggressive goals, demonstrating a strong commitment to organizational success and managing resources.
  • Strong work ethic; highest standards of ethics and compliance with governing regulations, standards and laws.
  • Extended hours and cross border travel may be required at times.
