The Department of Facilities Operations at Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Plumber. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) second shift ( Monday – Friday, 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm), Service Employee position, reporting to the Facilities Operations Manager. Overtime, weekend and holiday work will be available for campus support.

Responsibilities
The Incumbent will have general responsibility for the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and heating systems and associated equipment for properties owned or maintained by the College in support of the educational goals of the institution, and will perform the following (but not limited to the following) specific duties:

Essential Job Functions
  • Ensure the use of current plumbing codes.
  • Layout, install, and repair plumbing/heating systems.
  • Carry out preventive maintenance on all plumbing systems.
  • Perform soldering and brazing techniques.
  • Repair and maintain backflow equipment as allowable by code.
  • Install systems from blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain all plumbing/heating equipment and systems in all campus owned buildings (ranging from large mechanical systems, kitchen systems, to residential systems).
  • Maintain sprinkler systems. (water and anti-freeze systems)
  • Utilize various plumbing testing equipment.
  • Repair, maintain, and inspect equipment used by/for food service, student projects, or other campus departments.
  • Lift and carry heavy equipment in close quarters. Candidate must be able to safely lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Work with external contractors as assigned by manager.
  • Know and follow City of Oberlin permit requirements and processes.
  • Follow all OSHA, Federal, State, Local and College safety regulations, codes and policies, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Complete and turn in work orders as noted in the work order procedure.
  • Carry a radio for communication at all times to provide coverage for immediate issues that may arise on campus as well as for normal communications of work related duties.

Marginal Job Functions
  • Effectively respond to and handle various plumbing and heating emergencies as appropriate, and, when necessary, refer situations to a manager.
  • Maintain all college vehicles that are assigned to your responsibility in a clean and neat manner.
  • Safeguard all college property which is under your responsibility.
  • Operate all college property in a safe manner.
  • Provide technical support and training within trade to apprentices and developmental employees as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Presently hold a Journeyman classification in Plumbing, or served a bona fide apprenticeship (4-year program) and have a certificate which substantiates claim of such service, or have eight years of practical experience and can prove same with proper affidavits; willingness to participate in training classes and seminars to improve job skills; ability to understand complex system drawings and specifications and mathematical calculations; demonstrated ability to utilize the proper equipment and safety procedures to install, maintain and repair plumbing systems; demonstrated ability to work well in a complex organizational structure responding to the needs of a diverse multicultural educational community; demonstrated ability to work alone without direct supervision as well as work with trainees, contractors, municipal employees and others; demonstrated ability to perform high-work (interior and exterior), and work in confined spaces; occasionally perform lifting, climbing, and work in inclement weather conditions; possess a valid Ohio driver’s license and ability to meet and maintain the College’s insurability standards; and favorable references, including a good attendance record. Candidate must have basic familiarity with the usage of computers, computer software and internet browsing.

Any offer made to an external candidate is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a comprehensive background investigation and pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol testing.

External candidates are subject to a physical/fit-for-duty examination to ensure the physical demands of the job can be met.

Desired Qualifications

Compensation
This Pay Grade 9 Service Employee position will be filled at a base rate of $31.09 per hour plus 2nd shift differential rate, or at the appropriate transfer rate for internal candidates. A generous benefits package is included.
