The Board of Police and Fire Commissioners of the Village of Crete, Illinois is accepting applications for the position of police officer with the Crete Police Department. The Crete Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that endeavors to address specific citizen concerns as well as respond to criminal activity and emergencies. They strive to provide a high quality of police service for their citizens and businesses.

Salary Range: $56,474 to $77,219

Sworn Police Officers: 20 full-time and 4 part-time


All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements established by the Village of Crete:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the U.S.;
  • Must have a valid Driver's License;
  • Must live within 25 miles of the Village of Crete within 18 months of hire;
  • Must be at least 21 years old at time of application or 20 with successful completion of two years of law enforcement study at an accredited college or university
    • Applicants who are 20 years of age at time of application shall be eligible to take the initial examination, but will not be eligible for appointment (and shall be passed over) until such time as the Applicant reaches 21 years of age;
  • Must be UNDER 35 years of age at time of application, unless certified and employed as a full-time law enforcement officer for a municipality in the United States or are otherwise exempt by State Statute 65 IL 5/10-2.1.
    • If an Applicant becomes over age during the application process or while on an active eligibility list, such Applicant shall not be allowed to continue with the application process, shall not be appointed and such Applicant's name shall be deemed immediately stricken from the active eligibility list.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent;
  • Must have no felony convictions and be of good moral character (Note: a misdemeanor or serious traffic offense may also disqualify applicants from further consideration);
  • Must possess a valid P.O.W.E.R. Test card issued no more than 12 months prior to the submission of the application;
    • P.O.W.E.R. Test Cards issued by NIPSTA, Triton College, or Joliet Junior College will be accepted.
  • Pay a $45.00 non-refundable application processing fee.

A maximum of five (5) preference points will be awarded as determined by the Village of Crete for one of the following:
  • Military: Persons who were engaged in the military or naval service of the United States for at least one year, and were honorably discharged, - OR - who are now, or may hereafter be on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service. A copy of Form DD-214 or equivalent proof of current military service must be submitted with application to qualify (5 points).

- OR -

  • Education: Persons who have successfully obtained an Associate's Degree in the field of law enforcement or criminal justice - OR - a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Copy of unofficial transcripts must be submitted with application to qualify (5 points).

Submission of Application: Applications MUST be submitted online. Faxed, e-mailed, mailed or dropped off applications will NOT be accepted. Applications are being accepted on an on-going, rolling basis and will be reviewed monthly. Mandatory Next Steps in the Hiring Process:

Remote On-line Written Examination Testing: Following completion of all application materials and a review of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in remote on-line written exam testing. Testing will occur approximately once per month and you will be able to take the exam at your convenience during a 3-4 day window. You must take the exam within the time frame you are given. Candidates will need to have access to a laptop or desktop computer. All candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior regarding their status in the process, along with further instructions for taking the on-line written exam. NOTE: Please be sure to check your email spam folder. Many email account providers automatically send our emails there in error (i.e. Google, Yahoo, etc.).
