The Astrophysics group in the department of Physics at the George Washington University invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in observational high energy astrophysics, working under the mentorship of Dr. George Younes. The postdoctoral research scientist will work on data acquired with a suite of high energy telescopes, namely, NICER, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Chandra, IXPE, Fermi, and Swift. The candidate will also help advise graduate and undergraduate students and participate in national and international conferences. The candidate will be highly encouraged to pursue original lines of research both within the scope of these projects and through e.g., additional funded projects of mutual interest. Finally, candidates are expected to work within a highly active international research collaboration including the NICER magnetar and magnetosphere working group. Hence, those with a demonstrated interest in collaboration and mentoring will be viewed positively.

Postdocs will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees and other researchers.

Responsibilities will also include:
  • Analyze data obtained from any high energy telescope that is deemed necessary for the completion of a research project, e.g., NICER, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, Chandra, Swift, IXPE, Fermi.
  • Perform spectral and timing analysis, utilizing available codes, e.g. Xspec, yet proficient at writing custom codes.
  • Scientific article writing to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals. It is expected that the candidate will spend a considerable amount of time preparing publication to submit their findings to peer-reviewed journals.
  • The candidate will help the PI in PhD and undergraduate student supervision.
  • Team activity, organizing and running group meetings. The candidate is expected to lead a weekly or bi-weekly group meetings or Journal club.
  • Scientific conference participation – virtual and in-person. This includes participation in mission-specific conferences, aiding on mission design, running simulations, etc.
  • Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.


A Postdoctoral Associate:
  • holds a PhD or equivalent degree;
  • develops skills by participating in scholarly projects that are actively mentored by a member of the university faculty;
  • receives financial support in the form of a salary that is typically funded by grants, contracts or departmental funds secured by a faculty mentor; and
  • has a limited term of up to five years at GW.
In collaboration with experienced researchers, this role will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Special Instructions to the Applicant:
Appointments are limited-term and are designed for those who have recently received a doctorate. Appointments are made to academic departments with the approval of the department head and may require senior officer approval. Appointments are usually for not less than one term and are normally not renewed beyond a total of five years. This initial appointment is for one year, but a renewal for up to 3 years is anticipated, subject to performance and funding. The start date is expected to be August – September 2023, though an earlier start may be accommodated.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree or comparable doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.
  • Background in isolated neutron stars physics, radio pulsars, magnetars, and/or fast radio bursts is desirable, though not required.
