Established in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1983, Camp Horizons is an overnight traditional summer camp for campers ages 6-16. We are a diverse and inclusive community of campers and staff members from across the United States and around the world working, playing, and learning together. Since our founding, we have been fully accredited by the American Camp Association. We offer a variety of activities (including equestrian, aquatics, sports, and the arts) that challenge our campers to reach their full potential as individuals and team players. Core Responsibilities:

  • Support Leadership team in the development of a quality training program for all counseling staff; designs elements of training; assists staff in setting expectations and goals for the experience; trains staff appropriately in camp policy and safety procedures
  • Supervise staff, programs, and activities; visit cabins and work with counselors to develop a positive cabin, village, and camp community
  • Provide support and counsel to staff and campers; recognize the welfare of everyone in the villages and try to solve any problems; assist campers or staff that find it difficult to adjust to camp atmosphere
  • Learn the likes and dislikes of each camper; appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of each camper; identify camper needs; help youth to recognize their potential and grow as individuals
  • Establish a rapport with parents and campers; maintain good public relations; help campers and parents to recognize one another’s concerns
  • Communicate necessary announcements to campers and staff
  • Inform campers and staff about proper attire for classes/activities; enforce the dress code for all campers and staff
  • Identify the eating habits and special diets or campers; is knowledgeable about campers’ medical conditions and requirements; monitor dining halls during meals
  • Work with nurse if there are questions about health or behavior
  • Monitor staff morale by ensuring adequate sleep, time off, and providing appreciation activities
  • Mediate conflict between campers and staff; work closely with counselors involving camper management issues; keeps confidentiality
  • Assist in conducting opening day activities and scheduling all evening and special programs, staff, and facilities; oversee planning and execution of evening programs as assigned and provide support to staff who are working on special programs and activities
  • Report needed repairs to maintenance
  • Assist with overall camp administration operations; work in the camp office daily
  • Properly log incidents related to behavior according to the company incident report policy; record all conversations with parents in appropriate logs; meet daily with other administrative staff as well as Camp Directors
  • Conduct performance appraisal with each Head Counselor; discuss performance of all staff with Camp Directors; assist in the evaluation of all camp operations at the end of the season
  • Ensure all ACA (American Camp Association) standards are upheld
  • Maintain a positive work environment with all levels of the organization and guests; model appropriate behavior at all times including maintaining appropriate professional relationships/ boundaries with campers, staff, parents, visitors etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • CPR and First Aid Certification preferred
  • Be at least 21 years old and must have completed one year of college in accordance with American Camp Association standards.
  • Valid driver’s license preferred
  • Background in camping industry or related youth work
  • Ability to apply basic principles and techniques of supervision of youth, including but not limited to:
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of supervision of youth
  • Plan and organize the activities of programs
  • Express ideas and communicate safety regulations and emergency procedures to campers and staff
  • Modify behavior to effectively deal with all types of situations
  • Identify and to respond to environmental hazards related to activities
  • Observe camper behavior, determine appropriateness, enforce safety procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Effective, highly-organized, and responsible team player with strong service-minded work ethic
  • Professional interpersonal skills, communication skills, and public speaking skills
  • Competency in computer skills (database management, spreadsheets, word processing)
  • High level of energy and enthusiasm for working with children
  • Meet the physical demands of the job, including; regularly sitting, standing, and walking; reaching with hands and arms while talking and listening; occasionally using hands to handle or feel, taste and smell; occasionally lifting and/or moving up to fifty pounds; and having close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
