Program Manager, Ocean Metrics & Responsible Business

POSITION SUMMARY - This position is open to US CI offices (Arlington-VA, Seattle-WA, Honolulu- HI) or remote is possible within the US.

Conservation International (CI) has been protecting nature for the benefit of all for over 30 years. Through science, policy, and partnerships, CI is helping build a healthier, more prosperous, and more productive planet. As part of that effort, CI is partnering with the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) to develop an Ocean Hub to engage companies and cities directly in reducing their contribution to ocean degradation while providing an opportunity to implement sustainable practices with far-reaching environmental benefits. The SBTN Ocean Hub is focused initially on the launch of a Seafood Value Chains workstream (including aquaculture and fisheries production from freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems), which aims to provide guidance and develop methodologies for private sector companies to set science-based targets related to their seafood supply chains.

The Ocean Metrics & Responsible Business Program Manager will serve to support CI’s contribution as a co-leading organization of the SBTN Ocean Hub, in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The Program Manager will work closely with a technical lead and Ocean Hub Program Manager, positions both hosted at WWF, and liaise with a broader SBTN Oceans advisory group. The Manager will be housed within CI’s Global Fisheries and Aquaculture team in CI’s Center for Oceans and will collaborate closely with other Center for Ocean colleagues, as well as colleagues in the Moore Center for Science and corporate partnership leads within the Brand and Communications team.

This is a time-bound position for 2 years.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Co-lead technical work for the project (alongside the technical lead at WWF), including evaluating existing seafood standards, developing detailed targets and accounting methodologies for seafood companies, soliciting expert opinion for feedback alongside piloting methodologies with companies, and finalizing the first version of the completed SBTN methodology.
• Work closely with the SBTN Ocean Hub Program Manager at WWF and provide progress reporting as needed to internal and external technical advisors under the SBTN Ocean Hub partnership.
• Work alongside CI's Global Fisheries and Aquaculture team to integrate expertise and learnings into CI's ocean-based work, including its corporate partnership strategy.
• Represent CI as the project co-lead when participating in SBTN working and engagement groups.
• Monitor and analyze new technical information, policies, tools, and global trends related to science-based target approaches. Document learnings from projects to synthesize available and emerging science for the Seafood Value Chain workstream to quickly progress toward an appropriate methodology.
• Work directly with program and project staff to facilitate coordination and alignment for existing projects and new initiatives.
• Build and maintain an extensive network of relationships with key stakeholders, including local communities, governments, NGOs, the private sector, and other ocean-community leaders and academics.
• Interact daily with other program staff and CI divisions to advise and coordinate project activities or to obtain and disseminate information.
• Travel as necessary, providing relevant technical research and workshop planning and logistical support.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Bachelor’s degree and 4 to 6 years or more of related work experience in natural resource, fisheries, or aquaculture science and management, economics, corporate social responsibility, monitoring, and evaluation, or another related field.
• Familiarity with the seafood sector and markets-based conservation approach, including fishery and aquaculture standards and performance metrics.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate complex issues both verbally and in written form.
• Excellent technical and analytical skills, including demonstrated experience in project management.
• Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, with proven ability to turn vision and strategies into outcomes.
• Proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines. Adept at working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and with limited supervision.
• Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a matrixed team environment.
• Excellent interpersonal skills requiring knowing when to use courtesy, tact, and/or diplomacy to effectively communicate with all constituents.
• Fluency in English is required.

Preferred

• Master’s degree or higher.
• Familiarity with SBTi and/or existing SBTN Hubs.
• Familiarity with nature-positive thinking as it relates to ocean systems, corporate commitments, and corporate sustainability.
• Experience working with economic, ocean, coastal, and/or climate data.
• Experience building tools for decision-making and prioritization in conservation.
• Foreign language abilities.
