Project Specialist - Maine CDC in Augusta, ME

The mission of the Healthcare Epidemiology Program is to work to eliminate Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) and combat Antimicrobial Resistance (AR) by collaborating with federal and state stakeholders across the healthcare continuum, and the public.

Objectives of the program include 1) responding to healthcare facility public health threats such as outbreaks related to medical devices or procedures and emerging/re-emerging pathogens that express a high resistance to antimicrobial agents or have the ability to spread quickly (e.g. Ebola, COVID-19, carbapenemase-producing organisms, Candida auris); 2) conducting surveillance or accessing data relevant to HAI and AR; and 3) use that data to reduce and prevent HAIs and AR in Maine by working directly with healthcare facilities and stakeholders.

1. Knowledge, Skills and Certifications
Specific qualifications needed to perform the job including: necessary licenses, knowledge, skills, education, experience, training, and technical skills.

Required knowledge, skills, and certifications:
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in a clinical profession (e.g., Nursing, Medical Technology).
  • At least five (5) years of experience as an Infection Preventionist in an acute care hospital setting.
  • At least five (5) years of experience utilizing the National Healthcare and Safety Network (NHSN) federal database.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate with physicians and other healthcare professions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners.
  • Ability to draw logical inferences from data analysis.
  • Ability to determine types of data required.
  • Ability to collect data, including review of medical charts.
  • Ability to proficiently use Microsoft Office (e.g., WORD, Excel, Power Point).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to gather, synthesize, and summarize a variety of information
  • Ability to multitask between different projects and/or functions at the same time.
  • Ability to prioritize and utilize resources and support staff to complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to take complex scientific concepts and simplify into practical understandable terms.
2. Duties and Deliverable – Outline of specific job duties:
Specific duties required of the resource, as well as any expected deliverables, including necessary travel expectations.

Specific Job Duties: (all positions)
  • NHSN Lead:
o Respond to user inquires/consults related to the use of NHSN, including interpretation of definitions, analyzing reports, etc. Document inquires/consults in program logs for future grant reporting.
o Pull data from NHSN for state validation activities.
o Conduct data quality reviews on data submitted by healthcare facilities to NHSN and provide feedback to users.
  • Develop Infection Prevention web-based education modules for healthcare facilities (See education modules posted here for examples: https://maineinfectionpreventionforum.org/all-courses/ ) and/or education flyers (e.g., 1-2 paged information sheets pertaining to a specific topic).
  • Assist program staff with projects, as time allows. Example activities include but is not limited to literature reviews; development of documents and visual aids; and updating healthcare facility databases.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Expected Deliverables: Weekly activity report.

Out-of-State Travel: None.

3. Schedule
A summary of work schedule, including normal working hours, on-call expectations, allowed time off (which is non-billable), ability to work remote.

Normal working hours: This position is for 10 hrs. per week, on average. The normal working hours for this position are flexible.

On-call Expectations: None.

Allowed time off: Any requests for non-billable allowed time off will need approval by Department Program Manager.

Ability to work remotely: This position is eligible for remote work; however, employee must live within Maine. Employee may have access to a local State of Maine public health office, during normal business hours, in one of six locations across the state, via a full-time or shared/drop-in space with use of conference rooms and shared office equipment. When working remotely, travel to any local state public health office or other location for staff or project meetings will not be eligible for travel reimbursement but will be part of salary.

Compensation for roles at Staffing Solutions Organization LLC (SSO) varies depending on a wide array of factors including, but not limited to, the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. As required by applicable law, SSO provides the following reasonable range of compensation for this role.
