KO is HIRING the following position for our new partner, the Norfolk City Jail:


Position, Psychiatrist, on site & telehealth

Pay, Starting @ $175/hr

Schedule/Shift, PT, 16hrs total per week


The Part Time Psychiatrist for our Norfolk City Jail will provide independent psychiatric care in a correctional setting to a specified population of emergency patients. These patients will be referred to the psychiatrist via nursing, physician and/or QMHP staff based on their presentation of mental health history or current issues.

What You'll Do:

  • Abides by MEDIKO protocols and the regulations of the institution to which assigned.
  • Provides required documentation of services to the Corporate Medical Director in order to monitor services provided and compliance with facility/client contract.
  • Notifies Corporate Medical Director and Health Services Administrator of schedule changes in schedule coverage.
  • Assists in arrangements of coverage of psychiatric services if unavailable for extended period of time.
  • Collaborates with other MEDIKO Psychiatrists regarding issues of patient care.
  • Maintains and shows proof of current Virginia licensure and provides duplicate for personnel file.
  • Maintains CME requirements for continued psychiatric practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Reports to assigned facility at designated hour to examine referred patients either in person or via telehealth.
  • Ensures progress note documentation in Electronic Medical Record (EMR), or on approved paper form is in SOAP format, problem-oriented, and corresponds to the therapeutic order, and is legible if handwritten.
  • Ensures all documentation is dated, timed, problem-oriented and that encounters in EMR are located with document, or legible and signed if handwritten.
  • Adheres to the established formulary for therapeutic regimens before utilizing non-formulary procedures.
  • Provides emergency treatment on-site and responds appropriately in urgent or emergency situations.
  • Appropriately refers patients/inmates to off-site psychiatric facilities as required.
  • Provides clinical supervision to other professional personnel, providing instructions as needed.
  • Participates in the training program of the facility as requested.
  • Reports any doubts or questions regarding the lack of appropriate referrals, nursing or medical intervention necessary for the realization of established patient goals to the Corporate Medical Director for disposition.
  • Provides clinical oversight to the facility medical/mental health program as defined by the ACA standards.
  • Provides psychiatric services to inmates/patients as scheduled.
  • Partners with Health Services Administrator (HSA) in supervising continuous quality improvement program including patient grievances, utilization management, pharmacy and therapeutics and assists in development of criteria.
  • Serves as liaison with mental health care providers in the community.
  • Works with Health Services Administrator (HSA) and Qualified Mental Health Professional. To establish and maintain mental health chronic care clinics that assure compliance with ACA, NCCHC, State and Facility standards.
  • Assist the HSA to monitor pharmacy services including formulary compliance, prescribing patterns and dispensing of medications; participates with P&T committee.
  • Respects dignity and confidentiality of inmates.
  • Independent medical judgment with regards to patient diagnosis and treatment shall be unrestricted.

What We Require:

  • Must have and maintain current licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must maintain a current DEA registration.
  • Board certified or is qualified by the Commonwealth of Virginia laws and regulations to practice medicine.
  • Able to work under pressure and able to relate well to patients, security, visitors and co-workers.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR certification.
  • Criminal background check, Security Clearance and Drug Screening
