Job Summary:

The Department of Economic Security, Office of Public Affairs, is seeking experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Public Information Officer 3 supporting one of the following divisions: the Officer of the Director, the Division of Division of Aging & Adult Services/Division of Community Assistance and Development , and the Division of Employment and Rehabilitation Services.

The person in the Public Information Officer 3 (PIO3) position will collaborate with the DES Press Secretary, Deputy Press Secretary, Division Assistant Director and other colleagues to assist in the facilitation of communication planning and implementation. Duties will include strategic communication planning for the divisions, regular drafting of communication briefs for the division, newsletters, social medial messaging crafting and utilization, draft initial content for press releases, assist with division content for the DES Intranet and Internet pages, plan and develop communication components for special events, provide backup for the Deputy Press Secretary when needed, work with program staff to draft initial proposed responses for media requests and other duties as assigned by the Deputy Press Secretary, Press Secretary and/or Division Assistant Director.

Job Duties:

  • Produce promotional and educational materials, including DES Division success stories, infographics, guides, pamphlets and more for external promotion of DES programs.
  • Draft and edit internal and external division communications, including initial content for press releases, division articles for the DES Intranet and Internet pages, and social media messaging.
  • Assist division with strategic planning and implementation of their communication initiatives. Draft communication briefs for the division.
  • Provide backup for the Deputy Press Secretary when needed, including working with program staff to draft initial proposed responses for media requests and serving as a division point of contact for the Office of Communications.

  • Knowledge in accepted principles of written English, Including punctuation, grammar, usage and style
  • Knowledge in the principles and methods of strategic planning.
  • Knowledge in preparation and production of written and visual materials and materials to be presented orally.
  • Skills in planning and implementing promotional campaigns.
  • Skills in Writing and speaking clearly and succinctly.
  • Skills in addressing staff, clients, media and the general public with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Skills in developing and managing successful working relationships with a wide range of people.
  • Skills in preparing materials for oral, visual or written presentation.
  • Ability to manage time and resources to consistently meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to organize and promote special events.
  • Ability to think and speak extemporaneously.
  • Ability to draft content for internal and external dissemination on behalf of Division Assistant Directors and other staff as assigned.

Selective Preference(s):

  • Preferred candidates will possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, political science or a closely related field and at least three (3) years of professional experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired State employees.
  • Successfully pass background and reference checks; employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
  • In-state travel may be required for State business. Employees who drive on state business must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.) AND have an acceptable driving record for the last 39 months including no DUI, suspensions or revocations and less than 8 points on your license. If an Out of State Driver License was held within the last 39 months, a copy of your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) is required PRIOR to driving for State business. Employees may be required to use their own transportation as well as maintaining valid motor vehicle insurance and current Arizona vehicle registration; however, mileage will be reimbursed.

Retirement:

State employees are required to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS), the State sponsored retirement contribution plan and the Long-Term Disability (LTD) program after a 27-week waiting period. The ASRS defined benefit plan provides for life-long income upon retirement. You will also have the option to participate in a voluntary deferred compensation program to take advantage of tax-deferred retirement investments.
