Magnitude of Position

The Quality Manufacturing Engineering Manager leads the team and activities relating to manufacturing engineering, process improvement, and quality for the manufacturing site in Sterling, Illinois. The position requires strong leadership and management capabilities to focus on operational excellence, overseeing the implementation of improvements and cost savings, providing high levels of service to customers, and achievement of the financial and operational strategy for the company. The position is responsible for the leadership and development of the positions direct reports and for following established company policies and practices.

Environment of Position

A manufacturing facility of control transformers in which teamwork, respect, and integrity is espoused. Works closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Production, and Materials to ensure items are manufactured in a timely manner and according to specifications. Functions independently in a multi-task environment, as well as part of a team. Works in an office and manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels and typical manufacturing conditions.

Accountability

Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Manufacturing Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the team and activities relating to manufacturing engineering disciplines, continuous improvement, operational efficiency, and safety.

Responsibilities / Duties

  • This position leads both our manufacturing engineers and our quality technicians
  • As Quality Manager, you will ensure compliance with our Quality Standards, develop and monitor internal product and process quality controls as well as drive problem-solving and corrective action implementations
  • As Manufacturing Engineering Manager, you will lead the manufacturing engineering team, working to ensure our products are made according to established routings, with correct materials, and with safe, effective, and continually improving methods
  • Technical/Engineering (50%) responsibilities as well as Management/Leadership (50%) responsibilities
  • Support factory transformation in coordination with the Operations Director and Continuous Improvement leader by using lean principles
  • Lead all aspects of manufacturing process development, including tooling, methods, and physical layout.
  • Assist with troubleshooting shop floor problems, discrepancies, and investigations of nonconformance
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment using 5S and Standard Work. Educates and directs personnel on the use of these tools in the context of their responsibilities.
  • Drive the development and implementation of manufacturing process strategies and tactical execution of improvement projects.
  • Prepare/review capital and expense forecasts and address variance issues
  • Be a change leader within the organization regarding continuous improvement projects and other strategic leadership initiatives. Engage employees (salary and production) in identifying improvement opportunities, developing solutions, and implementing planning.
  • Take actions to ensure company KPIs are trending in positive directions. Develop and recommend improvements to KPIs as appropriate.
  • Ensure all project deliverables and outcomes are implemented on time, on budget, and within scope to meet the expectations of the project sponsor and process owner
  • Train and develop a variety of employees in manufacturing fundamentals as well as continuous improvement tools and methodologies.
  • Track and manage post-project-implementation performance monitoring, including control plan audits, savings verifications, and reporting.
  • Create standards and transfer best practices through manufacturing areas.
  • Lead the team in the design of work standards and other elements of superior manufacturing practice to aid plant improvement.
  • Confer with equipment vendors and solicit observations from operators
  • Ensure determination of root cause and corrective actions and develop project plans to drive change utilizing effective problem-solving techniques, including six sigma, when applicable
Qualifications/Experience Requirements

  • A bachelors degree is required with a technical major. (Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or similar)
  • Minimum five years of senior-level experience in manufacturing engineering. A successful track record of achieving improvements through the development of a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience effectively leading and managing people
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience and education in recognized lean manufacturing fundamentals systems such as VSM, Poke Yoke, waste elimination, Kaizen, and root cause analysis.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to work closely with the Director of Operations and the executive leadership team.
  • Demonstrated strategic planning skills and the capacity to provide manufacturing leadership to an organization with a global emphasis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products and ERP Systems, Infor Syteline experience a plus.
  • A history of developing effective and disciplined teams using strong management and training skills.
  • The ability to communicate across all levels, from the shop floor to members of the executive team.
  • Experience leading a transition to an automation-focused production model would be a plus.
