The expected ENTRY pay range for this position based on experience and equity within the Judicial Branch is $21.35 to $25.93.

This position is non-exempt under the FLSA.

About the Position
The Recreation Coordinator is an integral part of the direct care staff team that is closely involved in curriculum planning and implementation of physical education, recreational activities, and positive youth development activities. The Recreation Coordinator exhibits strong leadership and coaching skills applicable to youth. The Recreation Coordinator will work as a team with other detention staff to provide youth with appropriate activities in the evenings and weekends at the Juvenile Detention facility.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education, Communications, or a related field
OR
Combined education and experience qualifications:
  • 60 credit hours at an accredited university or college or a nationally recognized physical training certification; With two (2) years of experience administering age appropriate physical and recreational programs specifically designed for the adolescent developmental needs of youth ages 8 to 17
Other Requirements:

  • Positions in Detention are subject to Tuberculosis (TB) testing. All offers of employment are subject to successful completion of new employee processing and a negative TB result prior to the start date
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS
(This is not an all-inclusive list of all job duties that may be required; employees will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.)
  • Develops and implements curriculum for recreational activities, physical education programs and positive youth development activities for groups of adolescents residing in the Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Centers. Coordinates with Detention School and Detention staff
  • Modifies curriculum appropriately for youth’s medical needs
  • Trains unit staff on proper techniques for providing safe and appropriate physical education, activities, and other programming
  • Attends staff meetings and training programs
  • Provides necessary reports to Detention management
  • Performs sight and sound supervision of youth
  • Responds to emergency situations using approved techniques to deescalate the situation and secure youth for their safety
  • Completes inventory and orders equipment for physical education and programming opportunities
  • Supervises volunteers, as needed
  • Aid units by escorting youths to and from the gym
Working conditions:
Work activities may be performed indoors and outdoors and may require frequent walking on uneven or slippery surfaces, standing, sitting, running, conducting exercises, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching, making repetitive hand movement, and related physical activities in the performance of daily duties. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or tools and equipment used in assigned program area. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials, tools, equipment, objects, and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds.
May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. Employees will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.
To ensure that youth are engaged in supervised, meaningful physical and recreational activities, this position requires working evenings, weekends, and holidays in a secured detention facility.
