Representative I, UUI Rural Site supports multiple regions throughout Alaska performing assigned work in cable installation, construction, maintenance, operation, and servicing of telephone lines, instruments, Central Office, Earth Station, microwave, radio, and related equipment.

Essential Duties of the Position:

  • Installation & Repair – maintains company facilities, central office/earth stations
  • Outside Plant – Cable/Pole Line – climb poles, install or removing cable, securing and adjusting cable and equipment.
  • Tests & Routines and Safety – Completes testing and required routines; follow established safety procedures
  • Documentation – provide all documentation of testing, billing, maintenance of facilities, tools,
  • Facilities/Vehicles – Maintain, facilities, building structures, to include power/temperature, housekeeping, vehicle reports and projects.
  • On Call/Call Out requirements

Additional Job Requirements: This is a very entry level position within the Rural Network Operations team. Must have a basic understanding of Network, installation, modifications, and test procedures. Ability to support senior technicians, follow directions to execute basic equipment installation, test and turn up working under close supervision.

Essential Duties for this position:

  • Complete local service assignments, such as trouble tickets and service orders.
  • Preventative Maintenance – Monthly Station check ensuring site is secure, no damage, and equipment has a visual inspection.
  • On Call/Call Out as necessary to remove snow and general upkeep of company satellite and wireless company assets
  • Customer Premise CPE Installation – Installing equipment at Customer location for services, which may include Internet mounting equipment and connecting to customer computer.

Job Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and follow directions.
  • Knowledgeable and comfortable using hand-tools.
  • Must be dependable, and available to respond to call out situations.
  • Ability to use computer-based applications such as Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledgeable in electrical, construction work, and/or facility maintenance work
  • Requires excellent communication skills, listening, verbal, and, written in order to communicate ideas and concepts to co-workers and customers.
  • Requires professional customer experience and courteous interactions with customer and management.
  • Ability to learn and use climbing gear and follow safety protocols.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A minimum of six months living in an arctic environment.
  • Maintenance of satellite telecommunication or microwave transport also highly desired.
  • Experience in electrical, construction work or maintenance work desirable.
  • Experience within a telecommunications industry preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certifications: Industry specific certifications are highly valued.

Physical Requirements:

  • High degree of balance, coordination and strength needed routinely in climbing poles, towers, ladders, etc. and avoiding obstacles.
  • Daily walking, crawling, bending, stooping, and kneeling on varied surfaces such as roofs and in trenches often hampered by weather elements.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling to maneuver equipment/supplies of up to 70-pound loads occasionally, less weight more regularly following company guidelines for lifting over 50 pounds.
  • High degree of hand dexterity and eye/hand coordination to operate hand tools and to connect, separate, and twist multiple smaller items on a daily basis.
  • Clarity of vision at every distance with good depth perception and ability to distinguish colors routinely for driving and performing assigned tasks.
  • Good hearing, capable of distinction between equipment signals and the human voice often amidst background noises, such as wind, rain and traffic.

Working Conditions: Subject to adverse weather and driving conditions. Work involves heights up to 40 feet on poles and ladders. Work performed below overhead construction and in trenches to 10 feet in depth. Tasks performed around high-power electrical conductors and gas lines. Work areas can be cramped, dark, dusty, damp, wet, stuffy, sticky, smelly, hot and/or cold. May encounter unrestrained animals/pets. Must be able and willing to work flexible hours including, but not limited to, overtime, on-call, and/or additional time on weekends, holidays, evenings, before or after normal shift hours. Work occasionally requires extended periods of travel for training of personnel in other departments.

The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must have transportation to and from the job site. Must possess and maintain valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and satisfactory driving record and have the ability to transport visiting technicians and their equipment.
