Summary

The Research Assistant (RA) position is for part-time and short-term (between 10-20 hours a week for up to 6 months). The RAs will primarily collect, edit, and process data in support of a research study about how people recover from problems with alcohol. The RAs will conduct an inventory of environmental factors (e.g., locations, types, and conditions of buildings and public spaces) using a standardized survey tool in accordance with specified protocols and procedures. Training will be provided.
General Expectations:
  • Excellent attention to detail and time management, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, plan work to meet deadlines, problem solve and take initiative.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal skills, and highly organized.
  • Comfortable with standard computer programs (e.g., Word and Excel) and willing to learn new programs (e.g., quantitative, qualitative, and geographic information analysis software).
  • Able to be flexible in work schedule (e.g., outside of typical 9am-5pm office hours).
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be able to travel locally (need access to a car).
  • Works under supervision of the Research Manager and/or other senior staff.
  • Bachelor’s degree OR high school diploma/GED with at least three years of work experience.
  • Some health/behavioral health interest preferred.
Project Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Travel to neighborhoods within Detroit to record data as appropriate to the study (RAs will be trained).
  • Enter data into appropriate databases and/or spreadsheets for analysis.
  • Ensure data completeness and accuracy (e.g., review, identify, follow-up, and correct errors or missing data).
  • Document and maintain list of study records (e.g., dates and locations of field observations).
  • Understand, comply, and maintain data security and confidentiality protocols and procedures.
  • Understand and comply with safety protocols/procedures during field observations.
  • Report to supervisor (i.e., Research Manager) regularly.
  • Assist supervisor and other senior project staff with job-related duties/tasks.
