Normal Working Hours: Monday - Friday / 7am - 4pm / Full Time

Position Summary

The position is responsible for performing appropriate tests on CNC machines or related equipment, to analyze optimum cutting tool application speeds and feed for KSPT tools. The data analysis is used to provide the customer with recommended best cutting tool application information. The position supports a lean and safe environment, quality and supports teamwork throughout KSPT.


Essential Job Functions

  • Provide design efforts from inception through research & development analysis both in new product design and in existing product redesign.
  • Provide testing data of KSPT products against market competition.
  • Provide testing data of KSPT PVD coatings against market competition.
  • Perform testing to provide the tools effect on work piece material.
  • Interact with production personnel to define and solve manufacturing and design issues and recommend appropriate changes.
  • Participate in the testing process through test review and analysis to provide data to the Design Team. This information is used for researching, designing and developing proto-type tools for future solutions and product development.
  • Assist in the development or update implementation of software application data.
  • Determine and evaluate root causes and suggests improvement methods for increasing tool life.
  • Assist in developing new product within the Research and Development Department as market demands.
  • Develop speed and feed data and supporting documentation to accompany new product releases.
  • Provide tooling application assistance and training as needed to customers.
  • Act as project engineer and/or lead on new product development projects.

Marginal / Less Essential Job Functions

  • Assist CAD operator, test lab, manufacturing, quality assurance and materials & planning as required.
  • Assist in customer service as it relates to cutting tool applications.
  • Assist in improving test procedures and recommending new equipment, software or processes as they relate to tool testing.
  • Additional technical assistance and testing for the Research and Development Department.
  • May represent engineering as a SME member on cross-functional teams.
  • Additional responsibilities including attending professional seminars and trade shows to remain abreast of R&D methodologies in the tooling industry.

Educational Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or four to ten years of trade school/vocational education/work experience/or apprenticeship training related to the fields of machine trades and/or carbide round tool manufacturing and application.

Other Qualifications Desired

Training & Experience

  • One to two years’ experience in an industrial tool research and testing environment.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and work instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking, mathematical concepts including statistical reference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Familiar with the operation of personal computers; Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Basic knowledge of cutting tool design, carbide grades, CNC machine tools, inspection equipment and ability to read blue prints and CAD drawings.

License Required: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and meet requirements set by KSPT insurance carrier.


Visual Acuity: Must be able to visually examine tooling samples under varying magnification and read mechanical/tool drawings, precision measuring instruments and computer screens with or without accommodation.


Hearing Ability: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify correct grinding conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions: Well lit, climate controlled manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels. Position subject to occasional light to medium lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching and bending. Constant use of upper extremities with frequent gripping motions and wrist deviations. Occasional reaching above shoulder height, below the waist or lifting as required to retrieve and store materials. Exposure to hazards of moving equipment and automated machinery. Position requires prolonged sitting, standing and walking. Minimal skin exposure to detergents, oils and cutting/grinding fluids and minimal exposure to fumes, dusts, mists. Light travel may be required.

  • The incumbent must successfully perform all requirements of the position training plan.

When overtime is scheduled, it is mandatory.
