The Junior to Mid-Level scientific programmer/analyst will operate, maintain and further develop NOAA CoastWatch Ocean satellite data processing systems. This position requires knowledge of software engineering procedures and programming languages, in support of the current systems that generate ocean satellite products in HDF and NetCDF format and render earth observation satellite imagery. The position involves software testing and quality assurance. Knowledge of scientific data types and metadata standards is desirable. Cloud development experience is a plus. NOAA CoastWatch exists to help people access and use satellite data for their missions and applications. CoastWatch is a small team?dedicated to customer service and high standards. All team members have individual core technical responsibilities and are also engaged in the success of the overall organization by actively contributing to operational improvements and problem solutions. Responsibilities:

  • Conduct daily operations and maintenance of existing ocean satellite data processing systems, including data flow monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Development and enhancement of existing data processing systems and contribute to the design of new systems based on requirements, resources, and customer needs. Check in existing and updated software to Gitlab.
  • Support and contribute to design of data management/delivery systems.
  • Develop technical and non-technical documentation required for data processing system deliveries.
  • Engage in the success of the overall organization by actively contributing to operational improvements and problem solutions

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, or higher in computer science, information systems, mathematics, engineering, oceanography, physics, or related disciplines
  • Programming experience in Python, Perl, Java, C, Javascript, HTML and Unix shell scripts is highly desired.
  • Working Experience with version control software (Git preferred)
  • Proficiency in UNIX/LINUX operating systems
  • Experience with geographic and image data processing.
  • Experience with scientific data formats, such as HDF, NetCDF
  • Familiarity with SQL databases, such as PostgreSQL, MySQL.
  • Familiarity with webservers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
