The Screed Operator is an essential crew member responsible for the application of asphalt on highways/private roadways/parking lots/driveways operating screed controls. This is not an entry level position and may need to perform as an assistant foreman as needed.

Key Duties

  • Employee will be the primary operator on an asphalt paver who will adjust for obtaining proper depth, grade and finished cross section of asphalt material via screed extensions.
  • Works with with other crewmembers to apply asphalt as per plan specifications and may perform tasks of other crew positions as instructed by foreman to insure daily operations are met.
  • Must follow all corporate policies and procedures for a safe working environment.
  • Report any problems/issues to the Foreman, Superintendent, or Safety Manager.
  • Must be flexible with schedule changes, location changes, and shift changes.
  • Overtime work required. Out of town/county work may be required
  • Ability to follow Traffic Control instructions and practice safety standards per Company and ATTSA Safety Policy requirements.
  • Must adhere to PPE (personal protective equipment) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by company

Primary duties:

  • Ensure equipment is spreading material at appropriate specifications
  • Flag traffic
  • Load and unload materials
  • Shovel dirt, gravel, and asphalt
  • General clean up around job site
  • Monitor gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure machine is working properly
  • Perform daily maintenance checks
  • Ensure all tools are stored properly at the end of each shift.
  • Responsible for notifying department lead of any potential safety or equipment issues immediately.
  • Responsible for following processes and procedures correctly.
  • Responsible for wearing appropriate clothing, shoes, and personnel protective equipment.

Physical Demands:

  • Lifting and carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 50lbs (+-50%) of the time
  • Standing/walking/climbing (+-50%)of the time
  • Occasional sitting in a normal position for an extended time (+-50%)of the time
  • Frequent reaching/handling/feeling (+-70%) of the time
  • Frequent use of finger dexterity (+70%) of the time.

Working Conditions:

  • Noise level is moderate to high.
  • Work environment is not environmentally controlled, exposed to extreme heat and cold.

Education:

Ideal candidate should have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

Ideal candidate should have 5 or more years’ experience as an equipment operator in the asphalt industry and operational experience as a Screed Operator..

  • The ability to see details at a distance and close range.
  • The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal when it appears.
  • The ability to time your movements or the movement of a piece of equipment in anticipation of changes in the speed and/or direction of a moving object
  • The ability to choose quickly between two or more movements in response to two or more different signals (lights, sounds).

Posted salary or pay compensation ranges are approximate and dependent on applicable experience and qualifications. Upper ranges are flexible.
