Senior Plans Examiner (Fire District) Job at San Bernardino County
The San Bernardino County Fire District , Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) , is recruiting for Senior Plans Examiner who executes and coordinates specialized activities related to complex fire protection planning and engineering. Senior Plans Examiners implement, and have an in-depth knowledge of codes, ordinances and standards pertaining to building construction, site development and fire protection systems. The Senior Plans Examiners work independently to perform the full range of duties as assigned including the more complex activities associated with life safety plan checking.
Reviewing building and site plans and blueprints; making recommendations and corrections relative to code and ordinance requirements; determining appropriate fire protection measures; and preparing conditions of approval.
Reviewing complex engineering plans and hydraulic calculations to assure code compliance of fire protection requirements.
Coordinating the activities and training of subordinate fire prevention personnel as required; coordinating and making field inspections and system tests.
Conferring with the public and a variety of businesses regarding fire protection requirements and plans; maintaining effective public relations.
Representing the Fire District at various meetings at City and County level, as well as with architects and developers.
Assist in the evaluation of fire safety conditions; recommend changes in building and fire codes to remain current with new materials and methods of construction; review proposals for alternate methods of compliance for equivalency with code intent and recommend approval or denial.
Perform technical plan checking of residential, commercial and industrial building plans and designs for overall code compliance. Coordinate plan check activities with other city departments and outside agencies. Evaluate construction plans for the issuance of permits and collection of applicable fees.
Respond to inquiries from engineers, architects, designers and the public regarding the interpretation of technical code requirements, as well as any specific city building standards.
Advise permit applicants, engineers, designers or architects whose plan are not in conformance with required codes and indicate where designs do not comply with code requirements and regulations.
Research records and files for public dissemination and plan review data collections; develop written reports and generate correspondence as required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Travel: Travel within and outside the County may be required. A valid California Driver's License Class C and proof of automobile liability insurance must be provided at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Special Certifications: Must meet the certification requirements of the Plans Examiner level of the State Fire Marshal Certification Track for Fire Marshal series within (2) two years of appointment.
Health and Physical Condition: Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties established by the San Bernardino County Fire District.
Certifications: Must possess all of the following:
- CSFM Fire Inspector I Certification (or Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, & 1D course certificates)
- CSFM Fire Inspector II Certification (or Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, & 2D course certificates)
- CSFM Plans Examiner Certification (or Plans Examiner 1A, 1B, & 1C course certificates)

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in the field of fire prevention or fire protection planning. This experience must include a thorough knowledge of commercial and residential plan review and planning practices. Requires an extensive knowledge of codes, ordinances and standards pertaining to building designs, construction and site plans.
AND-
Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units in fire science, fire safety, building inspection technology, engineering, architecture, or related field from an accredited college or university.
