JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL HIRING EVENT ON:
Wednesday , May 17, 2023 from 3:30pm to 6:30pm at the Human Resources Division located at 1115 Truxtun Avenue, 1st Floor, Bakersfield , CA 93301. You will be given the opportunity to have your resume and application pre-screened, on site.

Shift information: 5% additional pay for evening shift work; 7.5% additional pay for night shift work. Applicants must be able and willing to work any shift of a 24-hour period and any 5 of 7 days.

Examinations: Written Exam (Weight 100%) May include knowledge of the principles and practices of records management; policies and procedures associated with the preparation, utilization, distribution, retention, retrieval and release of police reports, arrest records or a variety of other records and reports; computer operating systems and software related to processing and maintaining records; basic supervision and training principles and other relevant subjects .

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant a written examination. Should a written examination be necessary, the written examination will be weighted at 100%.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:

  • High School Diploma, G.E.D or equivalent.

  • Three years of clerical experience including one year of experience as a Sheriff’s Records Specialist OR an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to obtain the knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

  • Certification of Typing/Keyboarding speed of 50 net words per minute.

Possession of a Valid California Driver’s License is required upon appointment for some positions.

Applicants MUST submit a copy of their typing or keyboard certificate, issued within the last two years, verifying a speed of 50 net words per minute and attach it with their completed application. Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

Appointees will be fingerprinted and required to pass a background investigation.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time without notice.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made at the Kern County Sheriff's Office. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.

Retirement Program: Kern County Employees' Retirement Association (KCERA). This Section 401 (a) defined benefit retirement plan requires employer and employee contribution and pays retired employees a pension based on salary, years of service, and age upon retirement.

Deferred Compensation: This section 457 plan allows employees to contribute on a pre-tax basis to a supplemental retirement account which is then paid out to them when they retire.

Social Security Administration:
Note: Both Kern County and the employee contribute to Social Security and Medicare as follows:
  • The County of Kern withholds 6.2% for Social Security (FICA1) and 1.45% for Medicare (FICA2) from employee's payroll warrants
  • The County matches the employee's 6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare
