Distinguishing Features of the Position:

The Sorting Line Worker performs a variety of manual labor tasks associated with the separation of recycled materials from the waste stream. These materials are processed through the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) or the Transfer Stations. In addition, the incumbent in this position is required to keep the MRF and transfer stations in a neat and orderly condition. The work involves periods of sustained physical activity and performance of manual and unskilled work. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the MRF Manager or Transfer Station Manager. Incumbents perform related work as required.

Position Responsibilities: (The incumbent in this position may perform some or all of the following as well as other related activities not described.)

Sort recyclable materials (plastic, glass, metal cans, cardboard, newspaper, etc.) from the MRF sorting line or tipping floor, removing contaminants by hand;

  • Identify, sort, bag and load returnable deposit containers for shipment to redemption centers;
  • Sorts recyclable materials (clean wood, scrap metal, sheetrock, tires, etc.) from the construction and demolition debris deposited at the transfer stations;
  • Maintains strict adherence to quality control by removing contaminants from recycled materials;
  • Keeps the MRF, transfer stations and roadways neat by policing the area, picking up litter, and trash which may fall off trucks;
  • May be required to wet down the surrounding area to prevent dust and papers from blowing about;
  • Perform unskilled work in connection with grounds keeping (i.e., raking, cut grass, etc.); snow removal (i.e. shoveling walkways), general cleaning (i.e., washing windows), or minor carpentry or building repair work;
  • May work during Household Hazardous Waste Clean-up days as required;
  • Wears protective glasses, gloves, hard hats and other safety equipment as required;
  • Takes part in Agency safety training program and adheres to all applied rules and regulations;

Special Assignments

  • From time to time on a temporary basis or in an emergency situation may assume some of the responsibilities of other job positions.
  • Upon assignment after being trained, may occasionally operate light equipment used in handling recyclable material

Full Performance, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities and Personal Characteristics

Ability to distinguish recyclable materials from contaminants according to instruction; ability to perform manual labor including bending, lifting, loading and stretching for sustained periods of time, ability to perform manual labor tasks while wearing a respirator. Ability to work in manufacturing environment affected by weather temperature changes, ability to follow directions of others.

Minimum Requirements

None is required; Experience in general labor, warehouse work or recycling work is desirable.

Special Requirements

Incumbents who operate a motor vehicle must possess a clean, valid New York State driver’s license.
