Job Description:

Analyzes data output using statistical methodology to develop capacity-planning models to drive decision support for the rail car fleet sizing process. Develops and executes data mining programs using Business Objects or other distributed applications. Directly contacts cross-functional groups to communicate capacity requirements to support rail car demand decisions. Secures information to address all variances and make recommendations regarding future process improvements. Organizes and reviews agreements specific to asset leases and ownership and serves as the subject matter authority to explain details. Lead the ongoing pay processes for lease rentals and rail car purchases. Prepares and runs budgets in partnership with the Financial Planning and Budgeting team.


Works independently and receives minimal guidance. Coordinates with other operational departments to maintain clean records of the owned and leased fleet across the border


Accountabilities:

  • Owns decision support for the rail car fleet sizing process.
  • Serves as the specialist on railcar demand trends and forecasting, providing analysis using statistical techniques.
  • Provides asset utilization analysis and reporting while measuring key performance indices.
  • Develops reporting mechanisms utilizing data mining in support of asset management projects.
  • Develops and maintains standardized reports utilizing Business Object Report Generation system.
  • Leads and improves the railcar expense, inventory and invoicing processes.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and reports terms and agreements involving asset contracts.
  • Initiates the creation of Purchase Orders in SAP and follows up with Good Receipts to process invoice payments on time.
  • Coordinates with Budgeting and Planning on railcar operating expenses.
  • Partners with operations regarding day-to-day railcar utilization and to secure explanations regarding any variances in data outcomes.
  • Provides outstanding customer solutions.
  • Provides consulting to internal and external customers.
  • Develops and coordinates reports to understand market trends of negotiated car hire rates - cost for foreign roads to use our equipment, and cost of KCSR to use foreign and private equipment.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, preferably in Business, Economics or a related field
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in data and statistical analysis, including process improvement and implementation, Data Mining, utilization analysis, or process model development
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred:

  • Experience in the transportation or logistics business
  • General understanding of procurement processes
  • Knowledge of SAP / Business Objects
  • Familiar with Railinc
  • Advanced Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions

Working Conditions:

  • Business travel required, up to 20%
  • This position has a regular full time schedule with a normal work week of Monday through Friday. There may be a need for occasional work after hours or weekends.
  • Business travel is an essential requirement of this job. Employees must be able and willing to travel away from their primary work location up to 25% of the time.
