Cabot is seeking a talented engineer to join as a Sr. Process R&D Engineer in the Advanced Carbons team. Our product is a best-in-class conductive carbon nanomaterial, that has a range of applications including plastic composites and batteries. Carbon Nanostructures (CNS) are produced in a unique roll-to-roll Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process with significant opportunity for innovative technology development to improve production efficiency, increase sustainability, and new product development. This role will be located in Billerica, MA, Cabot’s primary R&D facility and support commissioning and initial operations of new production facilities.

In this role, you will be an independent researcher responsible for the delivery and/or leadership of projects of moderate to high complexity/scope and for contributing to the creation of new concepts and providing solutions to complex technical problems in the area of process development.
A successful candidate will be someone who:
Conducts independent research to understand and deliver solutions to technical and commercial problems in equipment or process design and research investigations. Sets hypotheses and devise technical approaches to complex problems. Employs thorough scientific approach, including understanding of literature, mechanistic thinking, hypothesis setting, experimentation, analysis, and reporting.- Supports existing and future operations by participating in troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts.
- Develops new process equipment to advance research on increasing capital efficiency and productivity of operations. Produces drawings of novel parts and assemblies to facilitate development of equipment and machines.
- Plans, schedules, conducts, or and coordinates detailed phases of projects of varying scopes to safely meet objectives and timeline. Generates data, conducts advanced statistical analysis, and organizes and interprets data to establish and support new process, materials, and/or application learning. Conducts tests, draws conclusions, advances hypotheses, and makes recommendations.
- Post-secondary degree (Bachelor’s/University) in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and generally 10+ years of related experience, Master’s Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering and generally 6+ years of related experience, OR Ph.D. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering generally with 2+ years related experience
- Process engineering experience, preferably in the areas of reaction engineering, catalyst design, catalytic processes, fluidized bed and chemical vapor deposition technologies. Experience with continuous fiber management processes is a plus.
- Technical Excellence. Advanced knowledge and understanding in chemical or mechanical engineering. Ability to balance high technical quality with the practicality of execution and timing. Eagerness to explore in pursuit of new ways to improve process equipment and create value. Knowledge of instruments and controls and programming (Labview). Experience with CAD and mechanical design. Familiar with mechanical equipment and their operation.
- Ability to connect between scientific disciplines. Ability to independently execute in a manner that is aligned with IP and business strategies. Comfort with what is unknown and an eagerness to explore in pursuit of new ways to improve and create value. Ability to synthesize and document experimental results in written reports to capture knowledge.
- Knowledge and effectiveness in the critical aspects of project management
- Communication & Presentation Skills. Ability to effectively engage in verbal and written communications that are timely, concise, clear, and relevant while delivering with empathy with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Computers. Excellent skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Works Safely. Strictly follows and complies with all SH&E procedures, standards and regulations and constantly strives for Excellence in the fields of sustainability and Safety, Health, and preservation of the Environment. Familiar with topics such as Process Safety Management (PSM), safe work permitting, lockout/tagout, emergency response, and hazard recognition.
