BART offers comprehensive compensation and benefits programs. Reports To


This position reports to the Structures Inspector Foreworker who assigns work and administers the first step of disciplinary procedure, and to the Section Manager, Structures Inspection and Maintenance who implements major personnel decisions such as hiring and termination.

Current Assignment


This classification performs a variety of structural inspections and reports all potential or actual structural defects to ensure the integrity and safety of District Structures. Incumbents in this class could be required to work by themselves, or as a member of a team in a field or office environment; incumbents must be self-motivated in structural inspection attitude and techniques; this class is distinguished from Structures Equipment Operators in that this position does not perform maintenance duties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists in the planning and preparation of structural inspections.
  • Inspects and records deterioration in structural components.
  • Inspects District infrastructure includes tunnels, other underground structures, aerial structure and bridges high above the ground.
  • Performs visual inspection while riding on District system revenue trains.
  • Reads and interprets diagrams, structural drawings and symbols.
  • Utilizes specialized equipment, sketches defects, photographs problem areas, takes measurements, and does minor calculations related to structural inspections.
  • Reports findings in written notes and inputs them into computerized database.
  • Notifies supervisor of serious or hazardous conditions.

Minimum Qualifications


Education:

  • Possession of a high school diploma, GED or recognized equivalent.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of (full-time equivalent) verifiable experience in heavy concrete and steel construction, or structural maintenance. Experience in inspection of concrete and steel structure is desirable.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must pass the District's certification test as Structural Inspector within 90 days of the hire date.
  • Must be willing to work different shifts as required to inspect various structures.
  • Must be physically able to walk, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, twist, work underground and heights up to 60 feet and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Must be physically able to climb and work from ladders.
  • Must be physically able to lift and carry 50 pounds for 100 yards or more.
  • Must be able to wear respiratory and fall protective equipment during the performance of assigned duties in accordance with the District Respirator Program and applicable Cal-OSHA requirements.
  • Must be able to understand, read and communicate in English

Knowledge of:

  • Heavy construction or structural maintenance.
  • Basic structural drawings.
  • Techniques of inspection of concrete and steel structures.
  • Defects found in concrete and steel structures.
  • Basic concrete and steel repair and technology.
  • Structural concrete and steel terminology.
  • Types of rail transit structures.
  • Construction math including basic algebraic concepts.
  • Rail transit inspection program and procedures.
  • Computerized database and spreadsheet.

Skill in:

  • Working independently and as a team member.
  • Planning and organizing a field inspection.
  • Reading and interpreting basic structural drawings.
  • Use of specialized inspection tools and equipment.
  • Identifying, locating, technical measuring, lettering, sketching, and describing structural defects.
  • Basic computer skills.

This is a SEIU Local 1021 Bargaining unit position. However, All SEIU members must follow the "Bid Form Process", failure to comply will invalidate an employee's application.
