Duties

The Compass School teachers (including floating teachers and auxiliary staff) are responsible for all aspects of care and education for children enrolled in The Compass School programs. These responsibilities include ensuring safety and physical comfort, development and implementation of a child-sensitive emergent curriculum that contributes to the emotional, physical, social, and cognitive development of the child, completing developmental assessments, and facilitating positive, supportive relationships with children, parents, and colleagues.
Essential Job Functions:
  • -Ensure the children's safety at all times within both the inside and outside school environments.
  • -Follow policies and procedures as outlined in The Compass School Employee Handbook, the Program Guide for Parents, the School's training website and the state's child care licensing regulations.
  • -Be a positive representative of The Compass School at all times. Convey an attitude that is positive, energetic, and enthusiastic about children, families, your work and the School.
  • -Be able and willing to work a flexible schedule, realizing that schedules are subject to change based on the needs of the school. Attendance will also occasionally be required beyond routine work hours for open houses, staff meetings, parent nights, training, school events, parent-teacher conferences, parent meetings, etc. All overtime hours must be approved by a supervisor in advance, and employees should not conduct any work beyond their approved work schedule.
  • -Facilitate and guide children's emerging interests and project exploration.
  • -Actively participate in creating an environment that supports cooperation, learning, and community in working with families, children and colleagues.
  • -Treat each child with dignity and respect.
  • -Help each child to become aware of his/her role as an integral part of the group.
  • -Encourage children's active involvement in problem solving, effective decision-making, and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • -Provide guidance to a child that includes redirection, supportive language, and positive reinforcement.
  • -At snack and meal times, sit with children and engage them in conversation, while offering assistance and reinforcing good habits and manners as needed.
  • -Ensure proper and required sight/sound supervision at all times. Sleeping infants and toddlers must be checked every fifteen minutes.
  • -Assist children in daily hygiene and self-care skills relating to the following as necessary: diapering, potty training, dressing, grooming, washing, and taking care of one's environment and the materials contained therein.
Curriculum:
  • -Implement developmentally appropriate curriculum for indoor and outdoor learning environments based on the Reggio Emilia-Inspired philosophy and/or the RIE philosophy for infants and toddlers.
  • -Document children's progress as well as the process of their development throughout the day and week by updating student portfolios, daily highlights, journals, progress reports, and daily logs in accordance with school policies.
  • -Help maintain a well ordered, aesthetically pleasing, stimulating physical environment (indoor and outdoor) to assist in facilitating learning.
  • -Deliver an age-appropriate instructional program that meet the needs of each individual child with concern for his/her interests, individual learning style, and pace of learning.
  • -Utilize a variety of teaching techniques, including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating, and reinforcing.
  • -Participate in all aspects of daily routines and transitions.
  • -Demonstrate respectful interactions with children, utilizing an appropriate tone of voice. Communicate calmly, clearly and with positive intentions when speaking with children, parents, and colleagues.
Communication:
  • -Greet each child and parent as they enter a classroom. If you do not know the child or parent, please introduce yourself. Acknowledge each child/parent as they leave for the day.
  • -Respect parent's individual differences, family styles, as well as cultural and socioeconomic differences.
  • -Help new parents and children transition into the program.
  • -Be respectful and supportive in all interactions with parents.
  • -Communicate positively and professionally in written, verbal and nonverbal forms the intent and methods of The Compass School's philosophy and curriculum as well as the social, emotional and cognitive development of children in the program.
  • -Maintain confidentiality with regard to information about The Compass School children, families and staff.
