Job Summary

LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Systems Administrator to join its team.

This position is located in Pasadena, California.

This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible.

Essential Job Duties
  • Linux, Mac and Windows Systems administration for computer servers, workstations and laptops as well as computer and peripherals related end user support in the General Computing group at LIGO Caltech.
  • Management and administration of multiple heterogeneous physical and virtual data centers.
  • Installation and support of multiple layer 2, layer 3 and wireless networks across a campus environment.
  • Support printers and other network-based peripherals and Audio-Visual systems.
  • Application support for a broad category of database, business, and engineering applications.
  • Provide server systems build and security best practices for a full stack Identity and Access Management system and account management.
  • Support modern technologies such as virtualization, Cloud Based computing, automated configuration management services, as well as enterprise systems backups at scale.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or 5 years of experience in a related field.
  • 3+ years supporting Linux, Windows and Mac workstations and servers (hardware and operating systems) and peripherals.
  • 1+ year(s) supporting Network infrastructure (layer 2 and 3) such as Juniper, CISCO, Brocade switches as well as wireless networks.
  • Ability to support site infrastructure (such as DNS, DHCP, NAT, LDAP, LAN, WAN, email) Management of onsite and remote backup systems.
  • Familiar with Cloud based platforms such as AWS or Azure.
  • Familiar with Hypervisors and Virtualization technology support concepts.
  • Familiar with remote management and systems automation concepts such as Puppet, Chef or Ansible.
  • End User support of Mac, Windows and Linux desktops, laptops, monitors, and/or peripherals.
  • Ability to travel for occasional training, conferences or to support LIGO Observatory's as required.
  • Strong Communication and systems documentation skills.
  • Physically ability to lift and move up to 20 pounds of computer hardware, monitors and/or peripherals.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years supporting Linux, Windows and Mac workstations and servers (hardware and operating systems) and peripherals.
  • Experience with network infrastructure concepts such TCP/IP, layer 2/3 routing (LAN/WAN), LDAP, DNS, NAT, VLAN's, subnetting and network port management and hardware support for network appliances such as Juniper, CISCO, Brocade or FiberStore switches and/or routers.
  • Experience in an Academic or research environment.
  • Experience with managing and reconciling a budget.
  • Experience with network security engineering concepts for layer 2/3 and wireless networks.
  • Familiarity with Identity and Access Management (IAM) controls and concepts.
  • 2+ Year experience with Cloud based platforms such AWS or Azure or similar.
  • 2+ year experience Virtualization technology and Hypervisor support such as or VMWare or Proxmox (VM's and Containers).
