The State College Area School District is currently accepting applications for a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments, TVI/Orientation and Mobility Specialist, COMS. This contract appointment will be effective August 2023.


The ability to establish relationships with students and collaborate with colleagues is critical to success in this position. The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to diversity and recognize equity and inclusivity as the foundations to prepare each student for lifelong success, our mission.


The District seeks dynamic, energetic educators who are student-focused and have knowledge of both theory and practice specific to the education of students with visual impairment disabilities. Organizational and collaborative skills are critical to success in this position. The District is searching for candidates who are committed to professional growth and development and possess various professional experiences. Candidates must possess the following qualifications:


  • Comprehensive knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures, including developing and writing IEP's and performing appropriate teaching techniques.
  • A professional teaching certificate from the Pennsylvania State Department of Education in teaching students who are blind/visually impaired.
  • Knowledge of Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) for the visually impaired.
  • Certification from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) in Orientation and Mobility, COMS.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional techniques, instructional materials, equipment, and assistive technology for the visually impaired.
  • Knowledge of the specific implications on learning and development for children with vision problems, low degrees of residual vision, or blindness.
  • Knowledge of equipment and assistive devices utilized by children with vision impairments, low degrees of residual vision, or blindness.
  • Knowledge of orientation and mobility needs of children with vision problems, low degrees of residual vision, or blindness.
  • Itinerant travel is required and the employee is frequently required to change locations and adapt to multiple environments across schools and offices.
