UVU PREP 2023 - Teaching Assistant Position Description

UVU PREP is a free summer program to help 12 to 15-year-old students excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects. The program provides hands-on learning experiences, challenging homework assignments, career awareness speakers, and weekly field trips.

This is an AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps is a unique service opportunity that’s different from employment. AmeriCorps members sign an agreement to complete a term of service from May 22, 2023 – July 14, 2023, with a brief mandatory virtual orientation in early May (date tentative). Members will serve a minimum of 300 hours during this time. AmeriCorps members will receive a living allowance of $4,200 during their term of service. This living allowance will be paid bi-weekly ($840 before tax). Additionally, upon successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps members will receive an education award of $1342.86.

Summary of Duties:

• Ensure the safety and appropriate behavior of program students ages 12-15
• Assist instructors and program students
• Tutor program students in the subjects of Science, Technology, and Math in one-on-one or group settings
• Grade homework and return to program students
• Grade special assignments, quizzes and tests
• Maintain daily program students’ records: homework, in class assignments, quizzes and tests
• Assist program participants during class time (M-Th)
• Facilitate and teach during group project workshops for an hour weekly to a group of 25-30 student (Training will be provided)
• Assist in program and classroom testing
• Work with UVU PREP staff in planning and preparation of special UVU PREP learning activities
• Serve as an example to the UVU PREP students in your charge
• Create and execute lesson plans that foster the development of a growth mindset, confidence in leadership, peer mentoring and educational achievement
• Attend daily staff meeting day debriefing meetings.
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and be a United States citizen or permanent resident
• Have cumulative college GPA of 3.5 or higher
• Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Education, Computer Science or other related majors
• B or higher in University Trigonometry or higher math course
• Must be available to work:
• May 22 - June 2, 2023, M-F (Staff training)
• June 5 - July 13, 2023 (June 19 & July 3-4 – off for staff & students), Monday-Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• July 13, 2023 (5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.) Closing Celebrations
• July 14, 2023 (8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.) Moving Day & Staff Appreciation Luncheon
• Prior experience working with adolescents preferred
• Secondary Education, Mathematics, Science, Engineering, or other related majors preferred

Skills:

• Lead classroom discussions/activities when needed
• Utilize effective verbal and written communication skills
• Maintain confidentiality of student records
• Ability to assess student work
• Capable of maintaining control of student groups
• Supervise middle school students (ages 12-15)
