Job Description:
The Office of Testing and Evaluation Services (OTES) supports the LSU campus by providing computer-based testing in the LSU Testing Center for LSU academic course exams, course placement, and national, state, and local tests. Other services such as instructor course evaluations, test and survey development, and scoring are also provided. The demand for online proctors is increasing because of the popularity of tests administered by computers. Online proctors monitor test like regular test proctors and often use webcams to ensure test takers are not cheating. They assist test-takers who have difficulty using a computer. Thus, they must be knowledgeable in troubleshooting minor computer problems. They coordinate with the technical support staff if technical issues arise.
The OTES has approximately 450 computer stations in four testing center locations in Himes Hall. The Testing Center typically impacts 20,000+ students and over 200,000+ tests per year (3 semesters). The Testing Center operates as a model provider of accessible, innovative, and state-of-the-art services and experiences by providing:
  • exceptional, cost-effective, and efficient services to students, faculty, LSU, and the greater community
  • the utmost integrity to our students, faculty, and administration with a fair, secure, consistent, and accurate testing experience
  • a technically state of the arts computer testing center that is comfortable and has a convenient testing environment
Job Overview:
Our test proctors will observe all exams to ensure that all who take a test in the Testing Center receives equitable treatment, that all testing procedures are followed and that all test-takers have the same opportunity to excel on the test
Proctors are responsible for maintaining the testing rooms, checking in and verifying student’s identification, ensuring students complete all work independently and ensuring only approved materials are used during the exam, and that all materials are returned at the completion of the exam. Test proctors are essential to maintaining the integrity of our organization and of the tests our faculty have provided to the Testing Center to administer. Proctors must maintain a high level of professionalism and present the organization in the best possible light.
Responsibilities:
  • Checking in students which involves:
    • Verifying identification and test being taken
    • Assigning seat/section/computer station
    • Handing out approved documents and verifying calculators, if allowed.
  • Answering questions that test-takers have relative to testing procedures.
  • Ensure testing guidelines are strictly adhered to by students.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of all testing materials, and other test documents.
  • Assists in preparing testing center for daily testing sessions.
  • Observational walkthroughs and monitoring test-takers via video surveillance
    • Watching test takers, ensuring students complete all work independently.
    • Observing to ensuring only approved materials are used during the exam.
  • Following prescribed protocols if test-takers ask to step away (e.g. for the restroom) Proctors will monitor their computer station until they return.
  • Quiet is maintained in the testing center environment, Proctors should monitor the communication and noise level.
  • Verifying that the test-taker had submitted exam and checked out of the system.
  • Collecting allowed documents and test-takers finish their exams.
  • Report rule violations and/or unusual occurrences and/or suspicious activity during the test and any other suspected irregularities to Testing Center Manager.
  • Provide basic technical support

  • Impeccable integrity and a commitment to upholding standards and policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of all testing materials, and other allowed test documents.
  • Keep all student and testing information confidential.
  • Communicate effectively with students speaking in a clear voice and give concise instructions.
  • Willingness to follow all protocols and procedures.
  • Good typing skills, basic computer skills, and knowledge/proficiency in navigating widely used software: such as Microsoft WORD and EXCEL.
    • Willingness to learn the necessary technical/computer skills needed to operate computer software for student check-ins and check-outs in a large high-volume computer-based testing center.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Capable of working well in high-pressure situations.
  • Able to manage time effectively and multi-task efficiently.
  • Strong observational skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to details and accuracy.
  • Flexible scheduling for morning, afternoon, evening shifts and some Saturday availability
  • Able to be on feet for your designated shift - approx.6 hours a day.

Required Qualifications:
  • 21 years or older
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Upon request 3 references that can attest to honesty, integrity, reliability, and punctuality (must have reliable transportation)
Preferred Qualifications:
One year experience proctoring exams or familiarity with common exam practices and procedures
As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
This position and/or position’s responsibilities require work directly with minors. National Sex Offender Registry check required.
