Job Title: Track Laborer Department: Maintenance of Way (MOW) Reports to: Roadmaster Job Status: Full Time Schedule: 7:00am 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, (days may vary). On-call, overtime, travels 25%.

Summary:

As directed by the foreman, assists in the maintenance and repair of railroad track. Most of the work done is manual labor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at NPRC are, but are not limited to:

  • Installs and repairs railroad track on specified territory of railroad, using hand & track tools, materials and equipment to perform related maintenance.
  • Operates single- or multiple- head spike puller to pull old spikes from ties.
  • Raises rail, using hydraulic jack, to facilitate removal of old tie and installation of new tie.
  • Operates tie-adzing machine to cut portion of tie so that tie plate can be inserted to hold rail.
  • Drills holes through rails, tie plates, and fishplates for insertion of bolts and spike, using power drill.
  • Operates single- or multiple- head spike driving machine to drive spike into tie and secure rail.
  • Operates track-wrench machine to tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends of rails together.
  • Operates rail saw to cut rails to specified lengths.
  • Operates portable grinder to grind worn ends of rails.
  • Sprays ties, fishplates, and joints with oil to protect them from weather.

Physical Demands:

Continuous: Work outside on or near railroad tracks, (most of day spent on feet standing). Grasping hand & track tools, materials & equipment. Vision & hearing while on duty, balancing.

Frequent: Must be able to perform manual labor consisting of lifting & carrying 10-50 lbs, bending, and working at ground level in all types of weather. Balancing, crouching, hearing & vision, reaching above & below shoulder level, stooping and walking. Throwing a switch.

Occasional: Must be able to lift and carry 50 to 100 lbs, climbing on & off equipment or machines, driving, kneeling, squatting, ascend & descend ladders, sitting, ascend & descend stairs, twisting. Pushing & pulling.

Rare: crawling & jogging, sitting.

  • May require travel to various facilities and provide additional services.

Environmental:

Continuous: Must be able to work outdoors in all extreme weather conditions. Must wear appropriate safety equipment such as safety glasses, hard hats, safety footwear, and hearing protection as required. Exposure to dust. Uneven surfaces.

  • Occasional: Vibration, works at heights.

Education and Training:

  • GED or higher
