The Natural Capital Project (NatCap) aims to create a future where people and nature thrive. We are working to build a scientific basis and broad institutional support for protecting Earth’s vital life-support services and the people and economies dependent upon them. With our global hub at Stanford University, we are a unique partnership and strategic collaboration among: the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, the Stanford Center for Conservation Biology, The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Institute on the Environment at the University of Minnesota, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre. NatCap develops and applies new tools and approaches to better understand and integrate the full value of ecosystem services into decision-making. We are: (1) advancing science and developing software tools; (2) engaging with leaders to integrate understanding of nature’s benefits into decisions; and (3) mainstreaming our approach into policy, management, and finance.


NatCap is seeking a Training and Curriculum lead, collaborating with team members across the Natural Capital Project—in particular the Director of Research Impact, the Chief Strategy Officer, Training Coordinator, and other content experts—to develop and refine training program engagement practices and projects. The Training and Curriculum Lead will work to understand NatCap’s overall strategy to help implement the capacity building portions of it, have a solid understanding of our goals and objectives for the program as a whole and for each specific training or event, creatively match strategy with tactics, and ensure that NatCap trainings, workshops, and courses are professional and accomplishing desired objectives.


Examples of recent NatCap training workshops include:

  • In-person workshop Incorporating the Ecosystem Services Approach into Integrated Catchment Management and Planning in Lesotho. 40 participants representing 22 ministries, academic institutions, development partners, and NGOs.
  • Hybrid virtual workshop on Landscape Assessment for Natural Capital Accounting and Policy Applications in Zambia, including 64 participants representing policymakers and technical staff.
  • Technical workshops to “train the trainers” - teaching coastal planners, MPA managers, and conservation practitioners in Belize, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras to apply InVEST models and other tools to prioritize locations for climate adaptation in coastal zones.

Your responsibilities will include:

Collaborate with internal and external subject matter experts to develop and deliver curricula that builds capacity of NatCap’s partners, policymakers, government technical staff, project leads in development institutions, academics, and other stakeholders, building on and expanding NatCap’s existing library of training materials compiled from customized workshops, online resources and events.

  • Perform analysis of learning and business needs.
  • Proactively consult with subject matter experts to identify and formulate learning objectives and content.
  • Design learning and performance support solutions.
  • Draft storyboards and prototypes.
  • Design and develop course content, instructor and participant materials, including performance support materials.
  • Implement, evaluate and maintain learning solutions. Teach and/or assist in the teaching and evaluation of training workshops.
  • Develop and deliver Train-the-Trainer or faculty development programs. Coach and mentor NatCap training program staff.
  • Add to, organize, and maintain NatCap’s library of broadly applicable course materials. Build out the library of reusable materials, identifying and strategically filling gaps with new materials as they are developed for specific client demands.
  • Interact with vendor during design, development and implementation process as needed.
  • Share best practices through cross campus collaboration and instructional design community.
  • Ensure appropriateness, effectiveness and success of training programs
  • Maintain a database of NatCap training and outreach efforts. Perform analyses and produce reports on demand.
  • Design and implement evaluation systems that allow for tracking reach, effectiveness, and success of training programs.
  • Make recommendations, coordinate, and implement changes with NatCap staff.
  • Write and/or edit content for proposals and research grants that include capacity-building components, and other outreach and training activities.

To be successful in this position, you will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in consulting with business partners and subject matter experts to assess learning needs and recommend sound solutions.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying instructional design theory, models, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using instructional design tools such as learning project plans, design documents, learning hierarchies, storyboards, prototypes, etc.
  • Ability to clearly and succinctly convey learning content in a manner that engages learners and improves retention rates.
  • Demonstrated application of adult learning principles and methods.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and experience in industry standard tools such as authoring tools, digital, graphics media, audio, animation and video production tools to create impactful courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate the effectiveness of learning materials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team on multiple concurrent projects.

In addition, our preferred requirements include:

  • Advanced degree in environmental sciences, science education, economics, development studies, or related disciplines and five years of experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of and exposure to major global players, initiatives, and partnerships in the realm of biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, natural capital accounting, and nature-based solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience with capacity building and capacity needs assessments in developing countries, and in developing and delivering training in relevant topics (e.g., environment, development, ecosystem services, and/or climate change) to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience using GIS software and spatial analysis in support of conservation, natural resources management, ecosystem services assessment, and/or landscape restoration planning.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple concurrent projects. Must be able to identify priorities and maintain awareness of multiple deadlines.
  • Independent, proactive, and have initiative. Able and willing to learn quickly.
  • Strong team-oriented player with demonstrated interpersonal skills. Team leadership and project management experience preferred.
  • Experience working with collaborators from diverse backgrounds and coordinating contributions from a broad spectrum of actors to achieve a common goal.
  • Willingness to work outside of normal office hours at times, to accommodate international partners.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English. Professional competency in another language (particularly Spanish or Mandarin) is also desired.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applying instructional design theory, models, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using instructional design tools such as learning project plans, design documents, learning hierarchies, storyboards, prototypes, etc.
  • Ability to clearly and succinctly convey learning content in a manner that engages learners and improves retention rates.

The expected pay range for this position is $80,000 to $100,000 per annum.
