Posting Summary
Rutgers University Correctional Health Care is seeking a Staff Nurse for the Juvenile Justice Commission, located Jamesburg, New Jersey.

Utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Frequently functions guided by nursing protocols. Functions as a team leader as assigned. Demonstrates competency in assessment and identification of the physical health of adults (18 to 64 years), and geriatrics (65+) all population groups and their personal strengths. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs assessments of resident-patient in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, health care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary.
  • Communicates information in an accurate, concise and timely manner.
  • Adheres to institution and medical unit infection control policies.
  • Attends appropriate in-services and continuing education offerings to obtain and maintain necessary skills.
  • Participates in in-services, meetings and educational programs either as attendee or as a teacher, as arranged and approved by supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing

Certifications/Licenses
  • License to practice in the State of New Jersey.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • CPR Certification.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a correctional setting preferred.

Equipment Utilized

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • As a first responder must have the physical capacity to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Physically able to lift and carry upstairs an emergency treatment bag that can weigh up to 45 pounds and assist in lifting and rotating patients who are unable to ambulate (up to 50 pounds).

Immunization Requirements

Under Policy 60.1.35 Immunization Policy for Rutgers Employees and Prospective Employees, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster upon eligibility and upload proof of same. Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption.
