The Underwriter, Managed Care will independently underwrite, establish, and manage a portfolio of HMO reinsurance and/or Provider Excess Loss business.

A successful candidate will be analytical, resourceful, and self-motivated. In this role, an excellent communicator who is willing to speak up and offer ideas and suggestions is key. This individual should possess a willing spirit and be ready to jump in and independently advance projects and key priorities.
Responsibilities:
  • Within established authority limits and guidelines, analyze and price managed care (re)insurance risks based on factors such as experience, membership, plan metrics, contracted risk arrangements and any other factors having a bearing on the risk to be assumed.
  • Develop and maintain relations with managed care brokers, MCOs, issuing companies, reinsurers or others as appropriate.
  • Work with Healthcare Data Analysts and Underwriting Administrators to facilitate the RFP process, workflow, prescreening of RFPs, and organize/prioritize the underwriting process including required interaction with the submitting broker.
  • Using IOA Re tools, independently perform underwriting review, data analysis, risk evaluation and pricing of HMO Reinsurance and/or Provider Excess Loss accounts; working with Chief Underwriter and Carrier partners as needed/required by authority.
  • Construct proposal terms, negotiate rates, terms of coverage and pricing within guidelines.
  • Draft and issue reinsurance agreements and/or Provider Excess Loss policies.
  • Ensure underwriting files are fully always documented and audit ready.
  • Partner with claims and Medical Management department to actively manage portfolio, ensuring full account implementation, Medical Management engagement and administrative reporting requirements are met.
  • Proactively stay well informed of legislative, regulatory or industry changes impacting the managed care reinsurance market and perform necessary research to adapt products, risk evaluation and coverage changes as may be required.
  • Demonstrate ability to handle accounts that are increasingly more complex in terms of risk and size.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with and provide top quality service to assigned managed care brokers; evaluate quality of business; identify and cultivate potential opportunities.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to industry associations such as MCRA,etc.
Qualifications:
  • 5 years' managed care underwriting experience, preferably directly in HMO Reinsurance and/or Provider Excess of Loss.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare risk financing and risk arrangements specific to HMO Reinsurance and/or Provider Excess Loss to include Commercial, Medicaid and Medicare membership types of Existing relationship with key managed care reinsurance brokers and consultants.
  • Strong math skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, advanced analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Office skills, particularly with Excel.
  • Skillful time management and the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and interruptions in a high volume, production environment.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Can-do attitude.
