Employees at the Manatee County Water Treatment Plant provide reliable, safe drinking water to Manatee County, Sarasota County, and the cities served. The plant is staffed with dedicated, professionally trained, state certified operational, laboratory and maintenance personnel. This staff operates and maintains the advanced water purification facility. As a Water Treatment Operator I – III (DOQ), you will be responsible for ensuring the treatment processes are working to produce and distribute the correct quantity and quality of water around the clock to the citizens served. They read gauges, collect, and analyze samples, regulate chemicals and maintain appropriate records. They operate water filters and maintain proper levels in the storage facilities.

In accordance with level of qualifications, to perform various duties associated with the operation and maintenance of Manatee County water plants, related facilities, and equipment.

NOTE: POSITION LEVEL AND SALARY WILL BE DEPENDENT ON QUALIFICATIONS (DOQ).

ADDITIONAL "CAREER INCENTIVE" PAY IS AWARDED FOR THE FOLLOWING LEVELS: OPERATOR II/CLASS "B" LICENSE - $1.00 PER HOUR; OPERATOR III/CLASS "A" LICENSE - $1.50 PER HOUR.

Job Description

What You Will Do

  • Monitors operations and ensures mechanical defects, equipment malfunctions, etc., are handled appropriately.
  • Operates water filters; maintains proper water levels; washes filters when necessary; maintains proper water in tank and covered storage reservoir by operating pumps and opening and closing valves (only as directed by immediate supervisory.)
  • Cleans equipment, facilities and grounds as required.
  • Communicates clearly, effectively and tactfully, orally and in writing, including reading, understanding and following a variety of technical laboratory, operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Works emergency situations (including weather and other extreme conditions) as required.

Who You Are

  • Knowledge of water operations and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to read meters, gauges, charts, etc., and maintain appropriate records.
  • Ability to perform duties under a variety of environmental conditions, which may include various climatic temperatures and working with chemicals, fumes, odors, etc.
  • Ability to clearly identify sounds, i. e., backing equipment warnings, voice commands, running equipment, etc.
  • Skill in computer operations and pertinent software applications.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Skills


  • High school graduate/equivalent.
  • Prior experience related to the operation of mechanical/electrical equipment.
  • Valid driver's license with valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Operator I: FDEP Class "C" Water Operator License
    Operator II: FDEP Class "B" Water Operator License
    Operator III: FDEP Class "A" Water Operator License.
Desired Skills

  • Courses in Chemistry or related subjects desired.
