Employees at the Manatee County Water Treatment Plant provide reliable, safe drinking water to Manatee County, Sarasota County, and the cities served. The plant is staffed with dedicated, professionally trained, state certified operational, laboratory and maintenance personnel. This staff operates and maintains the advanced water purification facility. As a Water Treatment Operator Trainee - you will be responsible for ensuring the treatment processes are working to produce and distribute the correct quantity and quality of water around the clock to the citizens served. They read gauges, collect, and analyze samples, regulate chemicals and maintain appropriate records. They operate water filters and maintain proper levels in the storage facilities. A trainee is responsible for learning the operation of water or wastewater filters and chemical feeders used in the treatment of water or wastewater. Duties include taking samples for laboratory analysis and reading and recording meter readings at regular intervals.

Job Description

What You Will Do

  • Reads gauges, collects and analyzes water samples, regulates chemicals and maintains appropriate records (includes handling chemical bags and properly mixing chemical solutions).
  • Monitors operations and ensures mechanical defects, equipment malfunctions, etc., are handled appropriately.
  • Operates water filters; maintains proper water levels; washes filters when necessary; maintains proper water in tank and covered storage reservoir by operating pumps and opening and closing valves.

Who You Are

  • Ability to learn processes involved in water and/or wastewater treatment and the purification of water including some chemical tests.
  • Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and detect flaws and defects.
  • Ability to read simple meters and charts accurately and maintain simple records of shift operation.
  • Ability to climb and descend ladders and stairs.
  • Ability to distinguish colors

Minimum Qualifications

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate of competency
  • Valid Florida driver's license, or must obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Must secure a FDEP Class "C" Water and/or Wastewater Operator License within two (2) years of employment.

Desired Skills

Prior experience in servicing mechanical equipment and machinery desired.
