SCOPE: The Youth and Family Supervisor is the lead for all Urban League of Portland?s Youth and Family Programs, and is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating culturally specific youth programming for African American (and other) students and collaboration with their families. The Supervisor works with Urban League staff, volunteers and tutors in implementing Urban League youth and family programming including the coordination of chaperoning, preparing lesson plans and tutoring during homework club, summer programming, volunteer activities, presentations, and events. The Youth and Family Supervisor will provide individualized support to the team and directly to youth and families as they work to overcome barriers, assess supports and achieve long and short-term goals, with an emphasis on healing from trauma, academic success, cultural pride, leadership, civic engagement and career exploration and college preparation. The Supervisor will also research, identify and secure funding for use in enhancing youth and family programming options. This position requires organizational and time-management skills, adaptability, attention to details, good people skills, exceptional verbal and written communication, computer knowledge and an interest in helping to empower youth and their families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


Research and develop positive programming for youth

  • Assess the program requirements of youth in the community
  • Communicate with youth staff to determine their needs and interests
  • Communicate with organizations that represent youth to determine needs and interests of youth
  • Research funding sources and project requirements
  • Secure funding and prepare funding proposals (grant writing and reporting)
  • Ensure a variety of educational, sport, recreation, cultural and other programs are planned and implemented
  • Ensure program information is available via Urban League website and social media
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of programs and adjust as required

Plan and implement activities for youth

  • Supervise the day-to-day youth and family programs and the needs of youth
  • Plan and implement year-round youth programming, including afterschool and summer programming
  • Facilitate homework club and leadership development training
  • Schedule activities, facilities and volunteers as required
  • Supervise and lead activities for youth
  • Recruit, train and supervise staff and volunteers
  • Lead recruitment activities and connect with the community to encourage local youth to enroll and participate in program
  • Monitor and work with Youth and Family Specialist and tutors to ensure students complete homework assignments and receive necessary tutoring
  • Design and implement a family engagement structure, and include families in the growth and successes of students

Promote and market youth programs

  • Lead recruitment efforts for youth participants, including attending functions when necessary, tabling at events, and speaking at partner organizations, if needed.
  • Establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with local schools, community partners, businesses partners.
  • Organize and work cooperatively and effectively with individuals and groups; with the ability to transmit knowledge and skills to other staff, youth and adults.
  • Ensure that youth, their families and youth organizations are aware of available activities
  • Coordinate the advertising of youth programs
  • Maintain contacts with local, regional and territorial organizations for youth
  • Develop relationships with community partners to assist in delivering relevant workshops throughout the year

Administer program and supervision

  • Supervise Youth and Family program staff
  • Attend staff meetings, conferences, community meetings, training workshops and youth related meetings as assigned and related to and in support of youth and their families.
  • Prepare a plan for youth activities and a workplan for Youth and Family Program staff
  • Conduct home visits and facilitate group meetings for low income Black/African American families
  • Work with Youth and Family staff, AmeriCorp, SummerWorks and community partner agencies to recruit and train volunteers.
  • Prepare financial and program report.
  • Record information on and prepare reports concerning youth programs, costs, numbers of participants and equipment and facility use.
  • Monitor the use of equipment and facility.
  • Provide monthly and yearly reports about youth programs and opportunities.
  • Connect families with Urban League and community resources.
  • Ensure that all programs and activities are implemented according to relevant policies and procedures.
  • Lead, support and supervise efforts to write grants and engage in youth & family program fundraising efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
