The Zoo Interpreter engages visitors in interactive learning and discovery.

Essential Functions:

  • Regular and predictable attendance is expected and required. All Cleveland Metroparks employees must be prepared to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as required.
  • Interprets Zoo exhibits, animals, and biofacts for individuals, groups and organizations of all age levels.
  • Cooperates with and assists with the implementation of other education programs.
  • Presents ambassador animals to enhance education programs. This includes the handling of live reptiles, amphibians, insects, arachnids, mammals, and birds.
  • Answers correspondence and provides an informational service in response to telephone, written or personal inquiries.
  • Assists other Zoo and Cleveland Metroparks departments in projects benefiting the Park District.
  • Performs tasks as required by Education Assistant, Education Specialist, Education Manager and Education Curator.
  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or apparent.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree, or currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program from an accredited college or university with coursework in education, theatre, natural science or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of natural science, conservation and wildlife.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays and some evenings as assigned.
  • Demonstrated outgoing and engaging interpersonal skills.
  • Patience with children and general public crowds.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders, including employees and the general public.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely and persuasively using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation with ability to communicate one-on-one or in group settings.
  • Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and organization.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform with considerable independence and initiative.
  • These positions will need fingerprinting & drug screened this season to allow for likely cross-utilization with other Education programming.

Work Schedule:Up to 40 hours per week. Shift times mirror Zoo hours and vary within the season. Ability and willingness to work weekends, holidays, and some evenings as assigned.
