Job Summary

The Academic Advisor will offer guidance to undergraduate students in the CHHS program, in alignment with the university's regulations, pertaining to general education, majors, and graduation prerequisites. The Academic Advisor will play a crucial role in reinforcing programs and strategies intended to improve the academic accomplishments and retention of undergraduate CHHS students.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver comprehensive and well-rounded guidance to undergraduate CHHS students concerning CSULB policies and regulations, as well as pre-major/major/minor/certificate prerequisites, and General Education requirements to facilitate their achievement and timely graduation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in interacting with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Familiarity with the General Education curriculum, majors, and minors, as well as the registration and advising systems utilized at CSULB.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, in a student-centered office/program with a high volume of activity and demand.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer systems and platforms, including email, the internet, university CMS, CS Link, and EAB systems.
  • Exhibits robust critical and innovative thinking abilities, sound decision-making skills, and the ability to remain objective.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize responsibilities and meet project deadlines.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

Master's degree preferred. Demonstrated academic advising experience in a college setting is preferred.

Physical Summary

Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: $4,610 - $5,583 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,610 - $6,556 per month

Time Base

Full-time temporary position for one (1) year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Due to the nature of this position, current CSULB employees are subject to a criminal record check unless they have successfully completed a criminal background check through CSULB within the past 12 months.
