SUMMARY:

The Adoption Program Assistant is responsible for providing a high standard of customer service: presenting a positive and professional image with members of the community, and providing proper animal selection and educational materials to all adopters. This position will work primarily with cats at our new offsite adoption center in San Anselmo. They are accountable for accomplishing department goals, working collaboratively with Marin Humane stakeholders and supporting the mission, goals and philosophy of Marin Humane.


ACCOUNTABILITY: Adoption Supervisor

HOURS: 16 to 28 hours per week (2 to 4 days per week) - may include weekends


SALARY: $19.55/hr to $21.72/hr; .50/hr Bi-Lingual Differential; non exempt

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


FACILITATE ADOPTION PROCESS

  • Match appropriate adoption animals with potential adopters
  • Oversee and assist Adoption volunteers with applications and placements
  • Complete adoption paperwork and signing out of adopters; Assist Adoption Volunteers with orientation as needed
  • Inventory and maintain supply of forms and educational materials. Periodically update handouts
  • Balance money at the end of the day
  • Maintain Adoption Area in a neat and orderly manner

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Promote and emulate exemplary customer service by providing courteous, prompt and responsive service to internal and external customers
  • Understand, support, and articulate organization's policies and philosophies to the public in a positive and effective manner
  • Problem solve and think creatively to provide a positive outcome for our clients and the animals in our care. Diffuse conflict when necessary
  • Fosters teamwork, creativity and a work culture aligned with MHS mission and values.

ANIMAL CARE AND HANDLING

  • Knowledge and experience with a broad spectrum of domestic animals
  • Assures that all animals entrusted to the care of this department are handled properly, humanely, and with compassion
  • Understand the ideal placement and needs for adoption animals
  • Monitor the needs, locations & profiles of all adoption animals including Barnyard and Small Companion Animals
  • Identify health/medical issues on adoption animals and complete requests for veterinary examinations when necessary
  • Clean and disinfect Adoption area cages, when necessary, per protocols to maintain a safe and sanitary environment

SUPERVISE VOLUNTEERS

  • Contribute to the monthly Adoption Volunteer newsletter
  • Assist in supervising, training, and mentoring volunteers. Participate in educational opportunities
  • Constructively resolve volunteer conflicts when necessary

SAFETY AND SECURITY

  • Be proficient at reading animal body language and act accordingly towards fearful or aggressive animals
  • Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules
  • Must be willing to report safety violations as well as potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel
  • Maintains appropriate files and records as assigned
  • Adheres to the files and records retention policies and procedures

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

An ideal Candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Good written and excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Organizational skills/Leadership qualities
  • Basic computer skills and data entry. Experience with Shelter Buddy a plus
  • Good with details, paperwork and follow-through
  • Ability to comfortably handle various domestic animal species
  • Knowledge of basic animal care, animal behavior and compassion for animals, domestic and wild
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Focused, professional and calm in a fast paced, emotionally charged environment
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask but also to self start and keep busy when times are slow
  • Ability to maintain a courteous, positive & diplomatic demeanor when working with the public
  • Possession of valid California drivers’ license and good driving record

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A typical way of gaining the necessary knowledge, skill and ability outlined above is High School diploma or equivalent; Minimum of 2-3 years of customer service experience; Experience in supervising volunteers; Professional and/or personal animal handling experience; Ability to speak, read, and write Spanish desired.
